“What, ten years isn’t long enough?” She laughed, and he pulled her in for a lingering, deep kiss.

The heat of it. The penetrating warmth that went way down low and wrapped around her heart, soothing so much of the ache there. His fingers entangled her hair while tingles ran from her scalp to her toes—confirming the joy of, for once, putting her happiness first.

If only they weren’t standing in a showroom with a giant street-facing window, for all of Harlow to see.

She pulled back, another instant laugh barreling through her chest; her heart so light and full because he held her not like a man seeking to control or possess her, but like someone who genuinely cared. Someone who would be both her best friend and her lover.

“I’m going to assume all those kisses are your way of saying, ‘yes’.”

Maybe things could be as simple as Blaine said. Maybe her dad didn’t answer her calls because he was just pissed at her. After all, she’d refused to cave to what he wanted, to return to LA or get back with Anthony. For that, her father punished her.

So, maybe she worried and held back over nothing. Maybe the stuff with Anthony would never eventuate.
