“I’ll remember that.”

Morgan gave me a look that said I could and should leave. I nodded at her and then turned to look at Hope. I almost shouldn’t have because as soon as I did, I completely lost my train of thought.

“It was good to see you,” Hope said.

“Yeah, you too,” I stammered.

Her words helped get my brain to work again and with a nod I walked out of the office. When I closed the door behind me, I put my back up against it, put my head on the door, and exhaled slowly. It had been the highlight of my day to see Hope, but it had also been a slight torture as well.

Seeing her only reminded me how beautiful, smart, and incredible she was. She had a life, a drive, and a career, all things that I knew I could never be a part of. If I ever had a chance with her I had long since lost it. She was a woman who could have any man she wanted, and she would never want to be involved with a simple man like me, no matter how much I might want it.

The fact was, I had been in love with Hope Sinclair since the first moment I met her, and from the second moment, I knew she would never be mine.

Chapter 2

Hope

“What was that about?” Morgan asked me as soon as Mac left her office.

“What was what?” I asked.

“Don’t even try to play coy with me. Something was going on between you and Mac. I could feel it from across the room.”

“You’re imagining things.” I walked over to her desk and started putting the last of her stuff into a box. I tried to keep myself busy and my mind from thinking about Mac, but I could feel my cheeks were hot with embarrassment.

“Is something going on between the two of you?”

I lifted my head up and tried to look shocked by the comment. “What? No. I hardly know Mac.”

“Yet, you two seemed very chummy when he was here. What’s the story with that?” Morgan asked.

“Shouldn’t we get the last of your stuff packed away?”

“It can wait,” she said and leaned on the side of the desk.

“There’s nothing to tell. I’ve known Mac for years. We sometimes end up in the same social circles. New York is big but it isn’t that big, especially in our crowds.”

“Uh huh,” Morgan said, clearly not believing me.

“You know he was my mentor when I started college,” I started.

“Yes. Did something happen then?”

“No. Of course not. He was my mentor. It wouldn’t have been appropriate.”

“He certainly isn’t your mentor now.”

“It doesn’t matter. He’s MacKinlay Bennett. Oldest son of Remy Bennett,” I said, as if that explained everything.

“And?” Morgan replied, clearly thinking that it didn’t.

“You know who he is. What his family is. The man is the heir to a multi-billion-dollar corporation. His family hangs out with famous people. They are famous people. I’m just a doctorate candidate in English Lit.”

“And?” she said again.

“He isn’t interested in me. I’m not the type of person he would be interested in. I’m not in his league. I’m not even in the same category as he is.”

“What kind of bullshit is that?”
