“Did you just say bullshit?”

“When the shoe fits, or the word in this case.”

I laughed. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you use that word.”

“You’re getting off the subject. I can’t believe you would say that to me of all people. I don’t have your money.”

“My family has money, not me,” I interjected.

“Nor do I have your looks, your background, your upbringing, anything, and I still managed to bag the youngest son of the Bennett family. If anyone should be saying they aren’t good enough, it’s me.”

“Bullshit,” I countered and Morgan laughed.

“Exactly. If I can be with Walker, why couldn’t you be with Mac?”

“It’s different. I can’t explain it, it just is. Walker is Walker, Mac is Mac. It’s a different level with him.”

“You find Mac attractive, and you don’t with Walker, that’s the difference.”

“Walker’s a great guy, but yeah, I don’t see him in that way. It isn’t just because you’re in love with him and you two are perfect for each other. I never saw him or JD as anything more than good guys.”

I immediately realized my mistake as soon as the sentence was out of my mouth.

“But you definitely do with Mac. You practically admitted it.”

“Who wouldn’t be?” I asked and then laughed as I knew Morgan wouldn’t think or look at Mac the way I did.

“You know what I mean,” I added.

“I do, but do you? Do you hear what you’re saying?”

“It doesn’t matter if I’m interested in him, he’s not interested in me. He has never looked at me as anything more than a nuisance or with passing interest at best.”

“He certainly didn’t sound like he was just passing the time when he was talking to you, nor with how he was looking at you.”

“Shut up. He was not looking at me in any way,” I said but I could feel myself blushing again.

“You didn’t see how his eyes lingered on you when you weren’t looking at him. There’s something there and you should see what that is, immediately.”

My first thought was to tell her I would think about it. I wanted to but I couldn’t. It was wonderful to think that Mac might have a thing for me. It was another to actually do anything about it. We were on the same committees for a few charity organizations. We ran in the same social circles. The last thing I needed was to embarrass myself by asking him out and then have to see him at one of those events.

“Not going to happen. I just finished my dissertation. The last thing I need right now is to get involved with anyone. Plus, I’m meeting Bash in a half hour to talk about what’s going on with us.”

“Oh, what is going on with you two? I thought you called it quits?”

“It was more that we both mutually stopped calling. I wouldn’t say we ghosted each other; it was just that we both got busy. He was opening up his restaurant and I was finishing up in school. Plus, with him being in Boston there didn’t seem to be a point in continuing anything.”

“He’s thinking of opening up more restaurants. He and I were talking about it the other day,” Morgan said.

“That’s right. I forgot he’s one of your clients. How’s that going?”

“You know I can’t talk about that,” Morgan stated.

“Fair enough. Is he thinking of opening up restaurants back here or moving back here?”

“Would you want him to? From what I remember, you two were more a convenience to each other than anything else. I didn’t think it was serious.”

“It wasn’t, it couldn’t be. I don’t know. We never let it get to that point. I’m not even sure if we want it to. It’s been so long since I’ve seen him, much less thought about him, I have no idea how it’s going to go.”
