“You seem happy. Settled. Content.”

“I am. More so than I ever thought I’d be. I never would have imagined I would fall in love with my boss, or fall the way we did.”

“It certainly is a unique story.”

Morgan and Walker had gotten together when she had helped him navigate an alleged paternity suit against him. In order to make him look more respectable, the two had pretended to date only to then officially start seeing each other. It had blossomed into love.

“Have you forgiven Walker’s father for putting the whole thing into motion?”

“Sort of. I’m getting over it. He explained it all to me. He means well. He meant well.”

“I still can’t believe he was the one who did that to you,” I said.

“Right? I love my parents and how involved they are in my life, but the Bennett’s take the cake on that one.”

“Is it too much? Are you worried it will be?”

“No, at least at the moment. I think with Walker saying he wouldn’t talk to his father again after he found out everything has curbed Remy and his need to interfere. Though, he does drop hints about Walker and I getting engaged every chance he gets.”

“Oh. Is that on the horizon?”

“I have no idea. I would think so. Eventually, but not right now. I’m trying not to think about it. I have a company I’m starting, and Walker and I’ve only been dating less than a year. There’s no need to rush anything.”

“As long as you two are happy, that’s all that matters.”

“Speaking of happy, think how much happier you would be if you were dating Mac.”

“Really? We’re going back to that?”

“We never left it as far as I’m concerned.”

“It’s a non-issue. I’m not sure what you saw or what you wanted to see, but there’s nothing there between Mac and me. There hasn’t been and there isn’t going to be.”

“If that’s what you need to say to make yourself feel better about not going for it, then so be it. I think there’s something there and you should think about pursuing it.”

“Pursuing? No one pursues MacKinlay Bennett.”

“I find it interesting that you use his whole name. What’s up with that?”

“It’s his name. It helps me to remind myself that he’s a man who has a name like MacKinlay.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“His family named him after a famous Scotch. They have a history of naming their offspring after names of liquors, because they can. Instead of people thinking they’re crazy for doing it, they’re considered cool, because they’re that rich and famous.”

“Did Mac seem like a rich, famous, and uptight guy when you were working with him?”

I thought back to the time we spent together. It had been nice, easy, wonderful even. He had made me feel comfortable about an endeavor I had been a bit hesitant about doing. He had shown me the ropes, taken me under his wing, and had certainly made the transition as easy as possible. When I was with him, I had forgotten who his family was or how much money he had.

“No. Not in the least. He was only doing that to make me feel comfortable. It doesn’t change the fact of who he is.”

“He’s a man who has feelings and thoughts and desires, just like everyone else. You should concentrate more on who he is than on what he is.”

“Is that what you did with Walker?”

“It was different with Walker and me. We weren’t dating because we were attracted to each other, we started dating to save his ass and his company. It allowed me to see him as a man, a person, and to get to know him on that level. It was easy to fall in love with him when his walls were down and mine were too. I have no idea if we would have ended up together if we hadn’t started out the way we did. I’d like to think so, but who knows?

“Now, he’s just Walker, the man I love. If you gave Mac a chance you might see him the same way.”
