“Hey!” Cole said and Faith laughed.

“Feel a little better?” Faith asked.

“Sort of, but no. I need to go and talk to Mac and figure things out.”

“Then what are you doing talking to us, go talk to him,” Cole said and waved his hands towards the door.

I looked at my watch and squirmed a little. “It’s late, I can talk to him tomorrow,” I said.

“Nope. Don’t do that. Don’t wait. Talk to him now. Do it while you’re thinking about it, while your head is full of him and everything you want to tell him. Don’t chicken out and lose your nerve. If he loves you, he’s going to want to know that you love him too as soon as possible. Don’t wait, don’t make him wait. Go now,” Cole said as he pushed me towards the door.

“What makes you think that I’m in love with him?” I asked over my shoulder.

“Are you?” Faith asked.

I thought about it for about a half a second. The answer was immediate and as soon as it was there it was like it had always been there. Cole was right, I needed to see Mac, I needed to talk to him, and I couldn’t and shouldn’t wait a second longer. I didn’t answer Faith, but I was sure the huge smile on my face was all the answer she needed.

Chapter 29

Mac

“You planned it all. Down to planting the idea of the restaurant in Bash’s head,” I said sternly to my father. I had never yelled at him nor my mother in my life and I wasn’t going to start now, but I was close. I had come in and told him I knew what he had done and what I thought about it.

It wasn’t said as a question or even an accusation, it was just a statement of fact. I had come over to my parents’ place to find them sitting in the living room enjoying a bottle of wine. It looked so cozy, so domesticated that I was almost jealous.

I wanted that with Hope. I wanted to come home to her and have a bottle of wine and hear about her day, to tell her about mine. I hated thinking that I might have lost that because of my father and his meddling.

“It was obvious how much you love the woman, but you hadn’t done anything to be with her. You needed a little push, so I gave you one. It worked. Didn’t it?” my father asked.

He wasn’t denying anything that he had done and by the look on his face he seemed proud of it.

“No, it didn’t. She has been offered a fellowship in Berlin to write her novel. She’s leaving the country.” I didn’t add, and me, but I was sure it was implied.

“Bah,” my father said and waved his hand in front of his face as if that was nothing to worry about.

“That’s wonderful for her. Hope must be so excited,” my mother said.

“Yes, she is. It will jump start her career for sure. I couldn’t be happier for her,” I said.

“Then what’s the problem? Go with her. If you love her, then you should be with her. I’m sure Walker and the rest of the staff can take care of things while you’re gone. or you could work remotely,” my father offered.

“Gee. If only I had thought of that too. Oh wait, I did. She doesn’t want me to go, and it’s all because you decided to meddle in our lives. I knew what I was doing, how I would win her over, I just needed more time, she needed more space, but instead, you had to push everything, just like you always do and you ruined everything.”

“Oh, honey. I’m so sorry. Did she break up with you?” my mother asked.

“Well, no, not exactly. We haven’t talked in a few days. She kicked me out of her place after I offered to go to Berlin with her.”

“You two had a fight and you think it’s over? You have a lot to learn about women,” my father muttered.

“I would say it’s a pretty significant fight when the woman says she doesn’t want me going with her on a trip where she’s going to be gone for a year. I think that puts an end to any chances we might have of being together,” I said.

“You need to fight harder for her,” he stated.

“No. I need to get my father to stop interfering in my life.”

I was pissed at him for getting involved. I was annoyed at my mother for not stopping him. I was angry at myself for allowing things to get this bad. Most of my anger was directed at my father and it frustrated me that he didn’t seem to understand why.

“No. I don’t,” he said matter of factly.
