Poppy texted again.

off to walk the perimeter before we go. i solemnly vow to stay on the right side this time. matt’s been telling us some really fun stories. can’t wait to share. have a great ride back with marco! so excited for you! xoxo

Even in her joy, Poppy was thinking about me. She was the sweetest.

My phone beeped again, this time with Summer’s tone.

holy crap! poppy just filled me in on what happened to you guys. she said you’re with marco. can’t wait for you to get back so i can hear the gory details firsthand.

I quickly replied, letting Summer know we’d get together as soon as possible and wishing her well with Xander.

“Sorry about that,” I told Marco. “Summer just texted. She’s up in Vancouver with Xander. She missed out on all the excitement.”

It was only a matter of time before I would hear from Jenny. None of us would text her this early in the morning, because she was likely still asleep. She was going to be sad she hadn’t been part of the action. Jenny lived for fun.

“It’s not a problem. I know how close you are with your friends.” Marco had been around them quite a bit the past month, as my friends were fully invested in my success at the Watering Can and often dropped by to help out. Summer was designing the logo. I couldn’t wait to see it. “How about we go take a walk on the beach before we head out? I also have to call the rental company and confirm that I’ll be driving the car up to Seattle.”

“The beach sounds perfect. Are you thinking we’ll make the trip all in one shot?” I asked casually.

He looked at me. His gaze was heated. Downright smoldering.

It took me by surprise, even though it shouldn’t have. I was pretty sure I was giving off the same smolder. I was trying to at least.

I swallowed, waiting for him to answer.

“We can decide later.” His voice wavered a little. “Is that okay?”

I nodded.

It was the most I could manage.

Marco paid our breakfast tab while I tried to keep my brain on task. Imagining being with him after all these years, knowing it was within my grasp, was headier than anything I’d felt in quite some time. It was right up there with my freshman-year fantasies of him taking me right there on the book counter.

My imagination was no less active now than it’d been back then.

I was fairly certain my blush had a blush.

As we exited the restaurant, he grabbed my hand as we walked to the car. Where we touched, my fingers tingled.

Who was I kidding? Everything tingled.

“I think the main beach is just up the road,” he told me as we got in the car. “It should only take a few minutes to get there.”

“I can’t wait.”

Like, I literally couldn’t wait for all the things that were about to happen.

It was Christmas Day times a thousand.
