Me: Your girl is all good. No cowboy walk for me today.

Piper: Uh oh. She’s not dishing about all the dick she had. He must have been bad.

Oh, how I wish she was right.

Instead, I’m pressing my thighs together just thinking about how amazing Bentley was. I only keep that information to myself because I don’t need them asking too many questions when I know I’ll never see him again.

Me: He wasn’t bad or good. It doesn’t really matter, though. It was a one-night stand.

Ella: Right. Just like my fiancé was only supposed to be pretend on vacation.

She might be right about her situation, but I’m nothing like Ella. She’s strong and beautiful and kind and caring. I’m wild and fire and too much to handle for most men.

My mouth never knows when to shut up, but I learned a long time ago to love myself just the way I am. If I have to change for someone to care about me, then they aren’t worth my time.

Piper: Kenzie settle down? I find that hard to picture… I look forward to meeting the man who can tame our girl, though.

I laugh at that. I know Piper speaks only from the heart.

Me: I love you both. I need to get some shit done. Chat later.

I put my phone down and go back to looking over the papers. Before I get too buried in them, I check my new emails.

Joslin sent one about ten minutes ago, and I click on that first.

McKenzie,

I talked with Marcy in HR. She said they’ll post your promotion along with the other restructuring I mentioned on the internal website tomorrow. Since you might not be here when that happens, I wanted to give you a heads up.

When you come in on Thursday, you’ll be working in your new office. We really want to get things running smoothly with our new workflow as soon as possible, and there are several new projects coming that we need you to get started on right away. Hopefully, you won’t be needing any time off in the coming months, but let me know right away if that’s something we need to prepare for.

Lastly, don’t worry about your desk. All of your items will be transferred to your new office by one of the techs. If you have any issues or questions with the additional paperwork left for you, let me know.

Joslin Croft

A wide grin spreads across my face, and a lightness fills my chest. I might have had the most amazing, yet worst one-night stand ever, but the more I learn about my new role, the more eager I am to get started.

I just hope it’s not Glen who has to move my stuff…

With that thought, I put some of my personal items into my purse. I can handle my computer being fucked with, but not the picture of me and my dad or me with my best girls.

I respond to Joslin’s email. As long as this volunteer position doesn’t require more time from me than I’m expecting, then I don’t foresee the need for any days off in the coming weeks or months.

After that, I go through the rest of the papers, keeping my chair positioned just right so I can see if anyone approaches me while I’m going over them.

The rest of the day goes by quickly. I keep my head down and focus on the smaller, lingering projects I had left for my current position and even stay later to get the last one wrapped up.

When I head out to my car, I’m still grinning, even though it’s nearing dark and only a few other vehicles are still in the parking lot.

Instead of heading home, I drive to Piper’s house. She might still be working, but after the last two days, I need some girl time. Badly. Plus, she’s least likely to turn me away now that Ella has Owen to keep her evenings occupied.

I punch in the code for the door lock—something all of us have to each other’s houses—and let myself in.

Piper’s humming can be heard coming from her office, so I head that way. When I get to the doorway, I realize she must have her earbuds in, because her head is bobbing while her chin rests in her hand.

Her deep-blue eyes are covered by her square-framed glasses, and her gaze scans the computer screen in front of her without noticing me. Her brunette hair is down, falling straight around her circular face and ending past her shoulders. She’s wearing a sweatshirt two sizes too big and black yoga pants that remind me I failed to do my morning exercises today. I’ll have to make up for it tonight once I’m home.

Piper snorts at something she reads, then types on the keyboard, making me grin. My girl is a kickass editor, and I’m so damn proud of her. Though, we don’t talk about her job much anymore. Not when it’s going to be taking her away from us.
