Deep in my heart, I’m happy for her. But the perpetual five-year-old inside of me is still kicking and screaming while we wait for her final move date to be announced.

I step forward, and she still doesn’t see me. I’m creeping slowly, trying not to scare her, but I fail. When I’m right behind her computer screen, Piper screams and picks up her mouse, chucking it right at my face and hitting me in the forehead

“Motherfucking hell, Pipe!” My hands cover my head in case she wants to throw anything else.

“Shit, Kenzie. You scared the hell out of me.” I hear her chair creak, and then a second later, her hands are tugging at my elbows. “Let me see.”

I lower my arms, and she winces. “It shouldn’t bruise, but there’s a red mark right in the middle of your forehead. Sorry.”

I chuckle. “Are you really?”

She shrugs. “Mostly. What are you doing here? Is everything okay?”

My head nods toward the kitchen. “Do you have some time for a glass of wine? After last night, I thought stopping by here would be safer than the bar.”

Piper loops her arm through mine. “Tell me everything.” Then, she cringes. “Well, noteverything.”

My body shakes with laughter. “You’re no fun.”

We step into her hallway, and two turns later, we’re in her kitchen. I jump onto the counter, letting my legs dangle over the edge. As Piper gets two glasses and a bottle of wine out, I begin rattling off everything that’s happened in more detail than text had allowed, from my promotion to the old lady Louise that I met in the bar, then to Bentley.

She remains stoically silent until I’m finished. Only then does she drink the rest of her wine in one long gulp and begin to fan herself.

“Damn, Kenz. I knew you were wild, but that sounds like a night of passion straight out of the novels I edit.” Then, she frowns. “Except for the part where he kicked you out. Neither of you got the other’s phone number?”

“Nope,” I say with an extra pop at the end.

She levels her eyes on me. “What are you going to do?”

I smirk and rub my hands over my thighs. “What do you mean?”

Piper fills both of our glasses again. “I’ve known you since grade school, McKenzie Jane. Don’t for one second pretend you don’t have a plan.”

My fingers drum over my dress pants while I lean back against the upper cabinets. “Honestly, I haven’t put a ton of thought into anything specific just yet. The work stuff has taken up a lot of brain space. I could just let this go and be thankful for finally getting properly fucked.”

She raises a brow. “Or?”

“Or I could figure out a way to cross paths with him again and make his life hell for being such a dick to me.” My smirk is all evil. While this idea seems most appealing in the moment, I’m slowly realizing that I deserve better than a good roll in bed.

I deserve to be wanted and cherished and admired for my flawsandperfections.

Not kicked out after his dick goes soft.

Maybe I will let this go. Maybe this is my chance to turn over a new leaf.

I have my new position at work, I’ll hopefully be getting a new house soon thanks to the pay increase, and yeah…

Fuck Bentley Businessman.

He can kiss my sweet ass. He’s the one missing out on greatness, not me.
