Chapter Ten

BLUE FUCK-ME HEELS

Bentley

A fresh start. That’s what I thought I was getting when I came back from Peru. I wasn’t attached to anyone, and I was starting a new job. I just had to go and let my cock fuck everything up.

Kenzie has somehow managed to appear everywhere in my life, and I don’t understand how things have spiraled so quickly. Or why I can’t get her out of my thoughts.

She walked into Owen’s house as if she owned the place, talking aboutmydick. Owen laughed it off, saying Kenzie is the wild one of their group, and he’s used to her spouting off. He was being kind, because I’m his boss.

A line was crossed last night that never should have existed in the first place. One I now need to rectify.

Though, I haven’t decided just how I want to do that. What I do know is that my work, the shelter, and making sure I don’t disappoint either of those places are important to me.

For now, I’m doing my best to push that infuriating redhead from my thoughts and focus on the reports on my desk.

My phone vibrates, and when I glance at the screen, I see Celia’s name.

“How’s my favorite brother this morning?” she asks when I answer.

I grunt. “Busy.”

“That’s nothing new. You always find something to occupy your time. We’re having lunch. I’m going to be at your work at noon exactly. You’re not allowed to say no. This is non-negotiable.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose. “What did you do, Celia?”

She scoffs. “I didn’t do a damn thing, Bentley. Us hanging out the other night just made me realize how much I missed you this summer.”

Fuck. I’m such an asshole sometimes.

“Sorry, Ce. I’ll see you for lunch,” I say with a softer tone.

“Love you, Brother.”

I lean back in my chair. “Love you, too.”

When she hangs up, I throw my phone back on the desk and let out a heavy sigh as I turn to look out the windows. The sky is clear, the sun is shining, and I should be happy. But fuck, I’m not.

Even Kenzie’s laugh haunts me as I sit there and try to sort out my thoughts. I need to figure out what the hell I’m going to do about this insane woman.

My desk phone rings, and I swivel back to answer it to see my new assistant’s name. “Hello, Brad.”

He chuckles, and my annoyance rises.

He clears his throat. “Sir, a Miss Kenzie Chase is here to see you.”

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” I growl into the phone.

“I heard that,” she shouts from the hallway.

I slam the phone down and storm across my office. With more than necessary force, I jerk my door open, point at her, then into my office.

Her arched brow quirks up. “Would you like me to come…in, Bentley?”

“Don’t show up at my work and play games,” I respond with as even of a tone as I’m currently capable of.

Brad shrinks back into his chair and finds something very interesting about a notepad on the desk.
