CHAPTER6

Felicity:Just flashed boobs, pubes and Scarlet at Oliver.

Evie:Holy Fuck. Did you blow his Armani pants off?

Felicity:Pants appear intact. Can’t even do walk of shame. Scarlet took a bollocking.

Evie:Poor baby. Call you in 5?

Felicity:Kombi van’s about to arrive for a test run. Tomo ok.

Evie:Fantastic! talk then. Send me a photo. luv u.

Felicity:Luv u. bye

Having sharedthe incident with Evie, it felt so much easier to see the funny side of it. Shortly after, hair dry and a slick of lip gloss applied, Felicity made her way carefully down the stairs. She’d slugged a couple of paracetamol. She couldn’t take the prescription medication that she luckily only rarely needed these days. It would be guaranteed to settle down the pain, but it also made her drowsy.

Not a wise move when she was about to test drive a camper in a strange city.

At the bottom of the stairs she wasn’t sure which way to turn. So many doors. When Oliver walked out of one of them with a whisky in his hand, they both halted.

The breath punched out of her lungs.

She saw the answering rise and fall of his chest under his shirt and oh god, knowing what that chest felt like against her wet nakedness was electrifying.

Everything seemed to have changed, shifted into a new era. Before spider. After spider. “Oh, hi,” she squeaked.

“Hi there.” A flash of white teeth. “Dad and I are having a drink, would you care to join us?”

“Erm—I’ll come and meet your dad, but no thank you to the drink. I’m about to test drive that kombi I mentioned.”

“Ah yes, for your trip.”

He was surveying her steadily out of those velvet eyes and her ears heated. He probably thought she had no backbone at all and would come running back after one more encounter with the Australian wildlife.

She straightened. “I just need to say that, in case you thought I was a little—erm—hysterical back there, it’s only spiders that terrify me. Snakes don’t bother me at all, and sharks aren’t a worry because I only really go in the sea up to my knees, kind of like a squirrel that’s fallen out of a tree into a stream—you know, absolute survival stuff.”

He laughed. “I could say that sharks can attack when people—or squirrels—are knee-deep in water, but I won’t.”

“You just did.”

“I did, didn’t I?”

He stood, casually swilling the whisky in his glass as if considering this. When he looked at her again, his mouth hitched to one side and her heart did a strange leap as if indeed, she was trying to escape something rather dangerous.

“Come and meet Dad.”

“Sure.”

As he led the way she tried to ignore how the muscles of his back formed a gorgeous v towards his shoulders. Luckily the book-lined room they entered was a distraction, and so was the man who greeted them. David Blake was well built and balding with Oliver’s dramatic eyes and a charming smile. He bounced out of his chair and gave her a warm kiss on the cheek. “Ah, you must be Felicity. So lovely to meet you. I can see the resemblance to Alice.”

“You can?” Really they looked nothing alike. Hair—eyes—nope, not at all. Except perhaps their lips. They both had a defined cupid’s bow like Henry.

“Yes, around the mouth,” David Blake remarked. “I hear Andrea’s given you the guest room on the same floor as Oliver, hope you can put up with him. He’s a messy bugger.” His grin widened.

“Yes, thank you. It’s the most beautiful room.” Mischief took hold. “Great bathroom too.”

Oliver nearly choked on his mouthful of whisky.
