But she couldn’t separate the man from the beast in her mind. He was one and the same. All power, grace, maleness, and dominance.

She squeezed her thighs together as she walked. The thought of him made her so, so wet, and he didn’t even know it.

Finally, they entered the barn. After she walked in, squeezing past without touching him, he shut the gate behind them, closing them in silence and darkness.

“There is a pallet to your right. Lie down and rest.”

She cocked her head, and if she were a puppy, she’d be cocking her ears, eager to please her master, ready to do his smallest bidding.

Did he sound angry still? Resigned? Indifferent?

Please let it not be indifference, she thought. Anything but that.

But she detected no subtle meaning in his tone of voice. Only that it was very controlled.

As her eyes adjusted to the dark, and guided by stray moonbeams filtering through small openings below the rafters, Divina found the pallet and sat down. She didn’t lie down fully, nor did she go to sleep. She watched unblinkingly as Andros knelt down on the ground a few feet away between her and the door.

He was protecting her, it was clear. Any threats that came through the entrance would have to go through him first to get to her. And she knew without a doubt that he wouldn’t let anything harm her.

But who would protect him? Especially from Divina herself?

Unable to hold in her remorse any longer, she blurted to his shadowy form, “I’m sorry for what I said earlier. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

He didn’t reply.

But she was certain he heard her. There were no other sounds in the barn, and his hearing was extremely keen.

“I want to explain,” she rushed on, fearful that he wouldn’t let her finish.

“Idowant you. You must know that I do. I can’t stop touching you when you’re near. I can’t look away. I can barely think. I’ve never wanted anything or anyone as much as I want you. And that just…”

She trailed off and gulped a breath before continuing in a whisper, “It scares me. I don’t know how to handle it.”

She thought she saw his neck arch toward her, his profile turning in her direction.

Yes, he was listening. She’d better make her words count.

“I think…if anything happens between us, it will change things. I mean, it won’t be like what I’ve had in the past—”

“No talk of other males,” his low growl cut through the darkness like a knife.

Divina sputtered, swallowing the rest of what she was going to say.

Merciful gods! Never had she found a male’s possessiveness to be pure, undiluted, clit-singeingsexshot directly into her veins until now.

She didn’t know how to recover from this sudden stall in her exposition, her mouth having gone dry and her wits having scattered like a startled flock of birds. She wrung her hands uselessly in her lap, gnawing on her lower lip, drowning in the silence that descended once more.

She’d never been so out of her element, so insecure and uncertain, as she was now. With Andros.

Divina had always had an endless reservoir of self-possession. She was a fertility dragon, after all. Unlike other dragons who lived alone at best, hunted and murdered as monsters at worst, she was worshipped like a god. People loved her. They celebrated her with colorful headdresses made of multi-colored feathers, decorative tunics and jewelry, and made merry in her honor.

It was why she loved jewels and all things beautiful. She loved to be loved.

And in her human form, she had been loved by many men. She loved men. Loved how their hardness, angles and planes were a perfect complement to her softness and curves.

But Andros was different.

From the first moment she met him, even as a horse, he was different.
