She simply…liked…him better.

She liked himbest.

“Come here,” he commanded in that low, resonant rumble, breaking the unbearable quiet.

Without thinking, Divina obeyed.

She got up from her pallet and moved toward him, stopping only when she stood immediately before him, her eyes almost level with his while he knelt on the ground.

“What are you afraid of, woman?”

His question was spoken in that same low voice. It stroked over her like a warm hand upon her back. Soothing, calming. Gentling.

As if she were a wild creature being lured from hiding by an outstretched hand.

“You,” she answered with the first thing that popped into her head.

Then added, “Me. I’m afraid of you and me. What would happen if—”

“Why do you concern yourself with what ifs?” he asked, sounding sincerely befuddled that she would bother.

“Because things could happen,” she flailed a little desperately. “I don’t know how long I’ll be here in these lands. I’m not from here, you know.”

“You don’t say.”

She squinted at his face, trying to see his expression better.

He didn’t seem to be making fun, only slightly teasing. She could see the sparkle of violet in his eyes.

She couldn’t look away.

“I don’t know if I can give you whatyouwant,” she went on. “I—”

“You should ask me.”

“What?” she started.

“Ask me before you make assumptions.”

That sounded immensely rational. So Divina followed his command.

“What do you want, Andros?”

He reached out slowly and took hold of her hand, pulling her closer until their faces were mere inches away. He raised her hand to drape it over his shoulder, then put her other hand on his chest, over his heart.

At the mere touch of his heated skin, Divina feared her IQ went down to low double digits.

“I want you. Right now. Right here. No one knows what tomorrow will bring. There is only today. I ask you again, Divina. Do you want me?”

Holy gods!

No one had ever spoken to her so plainly and honestly before. So filled with conviction and truth, and insanely hot innocence.

She almost bit her tongue in her hurry to respondrightlythis time. He wouldn’t have to ask her twice.

Er…thrice.

“Yes!” she practically shouted in a frog-like, lust-laden croak.
