But their words just now implied much more than a simple tool. They wanted him to “obey and love” them. To rule beside them as their “Dark Prince.”

He could barely fathom it. His gorge rose at the very notion.

“I see,” Brigid said in a matter-of-fact tone, not at all perturbed.

“I certainly prefer for you to take me over than him,” she nodded reasonably.

Sai’s eyes widened even as he had no other command of his body.

What waswrongwith her? Why didn’t she even try to run?

She could never escape the hold he had on her, of course. But why didn’t she make an effort?

“Since I am about to be snuffed from this universe forever,” she continued in that same calm tone, “may I make a final request?”

The darkness within him made him narrow his eyes with suspicion.

The only request I would consider granting is the manner of your death, the Master hissed.

Brigid gave a small nod and pushed her glasses up a little higher on the bridge of her nose.

“That is all I can ask for,” she agreed amicably.

“In that case, I would like to die by drowning. And I want Sai to be with me when I go. I want him to hold me while my last breath fades. When you take me over, you will awaken in his arms, just as you wished. And he will be yours, forevermore.”

He cocked his head slightly, scrutinizing. He could feel the Master’s suspicion flow like ice through his veins.

Without his will, his other arm shot out, his hand wrapping tight around Brigid’s throat, lifting her bodily off the ground.

Or, I could simply squeeze the breath out of you now,the darkness droned.

Brigid dangled limply from his outstretched arm. Both of her hands wrapped around his unyielding wrist.

But she didn’t struggle.

She simply looked at him with acceptance, her eyes already bulging behind her glasses. Her thumbs caressed the skin on the inside of his wrist as if to comfort him.

His body trembled from the war within. To tighten his hand or to loosen it.

The internal battle cost more of his strength, made his wounds ooze so much blood they soaked through his clothes.

Blood leaked out of every orifice. His eyes, nose and ears. It trickled from between his tightly compressed lips, dripped from the tips of his monstrous fangs.

He was killing himself by resisting the Master’s will, he knew. But he would die before he caused irreparable harm to Brigid. However this tragedy was to play out, he would not let his own body be her end.

Enough.

The Master relented and allowed him to release the choke hold he had on Brigid. She clutched one of his hands in both her own as she coughed and sucked in lung-fulls of air.

Death by drowning can easily be arranged, the Master communicated through Sai as he looked emotionlessly down at her.

It will save me the energy of repairing any damage done to my new body, after all.

I shall grant you your wish, changeling.

That said, he led her through a fog that suddenly enclosed them. When the mist parted, they stood on black sands before a stormy gray sea blanketed by inky darkness. Even the foam from the crashing waves was gray. Not a speckle of light could be found.

Except for Brigid.
