At last, they cleared the dark forests and exited onto the pebbled beach.

A shroud of darkness covered the sky. Lightning zigzagged directly into the ocean, as if Poseidon himself was hurling his tridents from the skies. Deafening booms of thunder shook the ground and churned the waves, as the atmosphere opened up to unleash a torrent of icy rain.

“Are you sure they’re here?” Annie shouted to be heard over the downpour, the crashing tides and resonant thunder.

“She said that if she could steer it, the final battle must be here,” Ben yelled back.

“I see no one!” Annie said, cupping her hands over her brow to shield her sight from the unrelenting rain.

“Where are they?”

Indeed, they were the only ones on the beach. No other living being could be seen. But Ben’s gut told him that this had to be the place.

“Perhaps they are beneath the waves,” he speculated.

“Or maybe we can’t see them because they are in another realm.”

“Look!” Annie called, pointing to a whirlpool that started to churn and expand close to the horizon.

“What’s that?”

The streaks of lightning moved toward the nexus and concentrated there, lighting up the maelstrom with blinding flashes. Heaven and sea collided and melded into one.

Before their disbelieving eyes, the heads, tentacles and fins of sea monsters rose above the tides, roaring and screeching before they went under again.

It could only be the source of the ultimate showdown, Ben surmised, squinting against the liquid onslaught that distorted his vision.

He and Annie were stranded on the beach. Even if they had a ship, they would immediately be tossed out of it given how furious the waves were churning. The unforgiving tides would crush them within moments if they tried to swim for it.

There was nothing they could do but watch the battle unfold.

Sai’s darkness-infused heart thumped sluggishly in his chest, as he held Brigid tightly in his arms, using his dragon weight to sink ever deeper into the ocean, taking her with him.

Her arms were looped around his neck in a lover’s embrace.

She didn’t kick or struggle. It seemed as if she was floating, as if they were both waltzing in the dark abyss.

It was a stark contrast to when he’d first taken her beneath the seas in their dream.

Her face was serene as she held his gaze. Somehow, her spectacles managed to stay on her nose. Somehow, she kept her eyes open and clear as she looked into his own.

In the inky darkness that surrounded them, she was the only light. With her pale, milky skin and halo of frizzy, flowing hair, she appeared to be an angel in the night.

It was how she always appeared to him, ever since he first entered her dreams.

This lovely fae creature anointed with stardust. Who brought joy and delight to everyone she touched.

Most of all to him.

A monster and a prisoner. A forsaken relic of bygone times.

He had always been a creature of darkness, a fearsome serpent lurking beneath the heavy waves, in lightless caves and forgotten shadows. But her innocent glow had beckoned him. Made him remember what and who he was, once upon a time…

The very first sea dragon that ruled the oceans.

He had been powerful and bright. He had commanded his own internal light.
