“And you?”

He glanced at her briefly before focusing back on their hands, as if that grounded him somehow.

“What of me?”

“What happens to you if you fail to complete your mission?” she delved.

He shrugged, even as the tension in his expression deepened.

“I go back to where I was before. Likely worse.”

“Where is that?” she whispered, dreading the answer.

But he shook his head this time, withholding.

“Doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me,” she stated staunchly. “I care about you.”

He chuckled darkly, his voice all wrong.

“You don’t know me.”

“No,” she conceded, searching what she could see of his face, while he bowed his head.

“I suppose not. But I want to. And I know enough of you from my dreams. Don’t you remember me? You know me as Titania, at least. And I know you’re my Pale Prince.”

He looked her in the eyes then, and the sadness and hopelessness there made her gasp in vicarious pain.

“They are mere dreams, Brigid,” he murmured. “They are not real.”

“What if we made them real?” she asked, beseeching him with her eyes to have faith.

“What if I can help you?”

He narrowed his eyes with suspicion. What a mercurial man.

“Why? Are you seduced by this form and face? Do you covet my apparent status and wealth? You should know this is all illusion. There is nothing for you to gain.”

“Nothing but knowing that I was able to aid someone who truly needed it,” she retorted.

“Not everyone who needs help deserves it,” he growled.

“Have you done something unforgivable, then?” she countered. “Do you think whatever punishment you’ve suffered is fair?”

He squeezed her hand hard. So hard, it hurt. But she didn’t complain. She simply held his stare unflinchingly.

“I’m willing to trade your freedom, and perhaps yourlife, for my own. Now, tell me what I deserve.”

She smiled at him.

“And yet here you are. Telling me the truth. Warning me about the danger. You, sir, are not nearly as bad as you think you are.”

He shook his head and tried to extricate his hand from hers.

She held on stubbornly tight.

“Tell me everything. The Master, the plan. Where you’ve been ordered to take me…”
