“Seriously?” Annie interjected, turning sharply to stare with round eyes at the two white steeds standing docilely in front of the phaeton.

It was clear she couldn’t see what Sai and Ben saw.

“How did you do it?” Ben questioned Brigid. “Do you even know what you did?”

“I…” she started and trailed off. Then shook her head with a slightly befuddled look.

“I am not aware that I’ve done anything. I only see two matching white horses. There is nothing out of the ordinary.”

“Oh, trust me,” Ben said firmly.

“There is definitely something extraordinary here.”

“I believe you,” she said simply.

And met Sai’s gaze with those clear pools of brown and green.

“I already knew he’s a dragon,” she said to Ben even though she kept her eyes fused with Sai’s.

“What I don’t understand right now, is what were those…thingsthat attacked us,” Ben continued.

“And why your magic didn’t turn them into chimpanzees or something fluffy and harmless, like you did with the rabid flowers and the zombie horses. You didn’t even have to touch them. Just being in your presence seems to have transformed them.”

“Because the flowers and the unicorns are their original forms,” Sai finally rasped out through a clenched jaw.

He had to concentrate especially hard to form coherent thoughts, never mind words. It was becoming more difficult to draw breath, and his vision was starting to be impaired by a seeping blackness around the edges and moments of blurriness.

He was determined to tell them everything he knew, however. Perhaps the knowledge would help Brigid defend against the Master’s machinations, whatever else might come.

“Lady Brigid merely lifted the dark magic that turned them in the first place,” he said.

“The demons were in their true forms. They are the Master’s own creations.”

Ben frowned in reflection.

“I must not have gotten a good look at them when they brought in the flowers. I don’t recall seeing the demons within the illusion.”

“I didn’t see them either,” Annie inserted. “The bouquet was so big, you couldn’t even see them carrying it. I only saw their immaculate uniforms.”

“Why did this…Master send those demons?” Ben asked.

“I do not know,” Sai answered.

“I am supposed to be…”

He wavered and tried to focus, but his thoughts were scattering faster than he could catch them.

“To make you…”

He tried to concentrate on Brigid, his brows drawing together with the effort.

“Love…”

He couldn’t keep his eyes open any more. There was still so much to say. Still so much Brigid needed to know to have a chance of defending herself against the Master.

Perhaps Ben and Annie could help. What could Sai offer them to entice and ensure their assistance?

Gods, he was so tired.
