How close?I wondered, my body practically vibrating as I stared at her eyes. At the deep brown irises and flecks of gold I found there.

It felt as though we were playing a game of chicken. There was a good chance I’d be the first one to break.

Kate eyed my hand, then reached up and tucked a tendril of blonde hair behind my ear. I half expected her to pull away after that, but instead, she cupped my face and pressed her forehead to mine.

My heart skipped. My pulse raced up to meet her as tentative fingertips held me still.

“Kate, I–”

She ran her thumb across my cheek, then tilted my head back and very gently kissed me on the lips. My heart seized. My wolf stirred. My eyes closed against my will. Once they did, I fully submitted to her.

It was a strange feeling, giving up my control to her. It wasn’t just because of the softness of her lips, either. It was everything about her.

Her smooth skin, the way she caressed my face with her fingertips, and the hint of peaches that teased my senses as she shifted next to me. That was her scent, the one I’d failed to recognize beneath the cinnamon and clove of the bakery for so long. It wasn't her shampoo, it was her. All of her. And I couldn’t get enough of it.

With her hand still on my cheek and mine lost somewhere in her hair, I met her in a hungry kiss that was just as exhilarating as the first.

Kate sucked in a breath, tensed, then relaxed as I pierced her lips with my tongue. Her back straightened, her hold on me tightening just enough for my wolf to notice. But as quickly as it had happened, it was gone, allowing me to lose myself under the wave that was Kate as the white surf crashed over top of me.

Thrown under the waves, I followed her lead, placing my hand on her neck and smiling into our kiss once I realized her heart was racing as fast as mine.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, a tiny voice told me this was wrong. It told me this wasn’t supposed to happen.

And yet, whenever I tried to pull away, Kate held me close.

I want to stay here,I thought as I placed my hand on the nape of her neck.I could stay here forever.

Holding her. Kissing her. Falling into the darkness with her.

By the time I opened my eyes, her cheeks were as red as my own.

“Nope,” she said, breathless. “Still not there.”

Nope?My heart dropped into the pit of my stomach. “I’m sorry. I–”

“You still aren’t there.” There was a huge grin on her face.

“Uh…”

“Personal space, remember?”

“Oh.” I paused, thinking back to our previous conversation. “Oh! I get it now.”

“So it looks like you have nothing to worry about.”

I guess not,I thought as I caressed her cheek with the backs of my fingertips.

“This isn’t the date you were expecting, is it?” Kate teased as she leaned into my touch.

“No, but I’ve gotta say, I like where it’s going.”

“Me too. Now, where’s that movie you were supposed to put on?”
