“So let me get this straight. You’d let me go to a shrink so long as they made me small enough to chase the rabbits out for you?”

“Admit it. It would be fun.”

“It would. Being younger, in general, would be good.”

“You mean before or after your first shift?”

Guilt tightened in my chest. “I’m sorry. I know how much you struggled during your first one.” As much as I would’ve loved to have wished mine away, Dustin was right. Cutting ties with that part of myself would cause even more issues later on.

That doesn’t make it any easier to deal with, though.

“So you really don’t know why you’re off?” he asked, pulling me from my thoughts.

“No. Oh! Did you know Nora’s out for surgery?”If that’s even a thing.

“The nice lady from the bakery, right?” When I nodded, he continued. “I heard Dad talking about it the other day. Something about her goddaughter?”

“Wait, so you knew and you didn’t tell me?” For being a gossiper, my brother sure liked to keep me out of the loop.

“I thought it was a rumor.”

“That’s never stopped you before.”

“Why?” He canted his head to the side.

“Why what?”

“Why do you ask?”

“Because a new girl’s working in Nora’s place.”

“Is she cute?” This time, when he spoke, he did so while looking right at me.

“Dustin, dude!”

“What? I’m allowed to ask. Besides, it isn’t like I’m going to go over there. So, is she?”

I let out a groan and hoped the heat rising in my cheeks wasn’t as noticeable to him as it was to me. “That all depends.”

“On?” He scooted closer to me, his body vibrating with excitement as he waited on the next detail.

“If you like pink hair.”

His eyes brightened. “And tattoos?”

I shook my head, then playfully pushed him away. “You’re terrible.”

“What?” he asked with a laugh. “I can’t help it if I have a type.”

“Pink hair, though?” I had to admit, she was pretty cute.

“Sure. Blue, green, fluorescent orange. You know the more fiery the hair, the better they are in bed, right?”

“And I’m out,” I said as I pushed away from the sofa.

“Oh my god.”

I froze at the bottom of the steps. “What?”Please tell me he didn’t find another spider.
