Clearly thankful for the reprieve, Kate hurried toward the steps, pulling me along with her. We made it halfway to the kitchen when something inside me snapped.

My entire life, I’d been loyal to my family, my pack. But in that moment, all I could think about was Kate’s safety, even if it meant going against my dad.

And I couldn’t just walk away without the fear of him following after us. So I held my ground.

“Why are you here?” I said as I neared the living room.

“That isn’t important,” my dad said without meeting my gaze.

The hell it’s not.

“Leave them be, Charlie. Your bickering won’t change anything now that they’re here.”

Now that we’re here? What was that supposed to mean?

“Come on, Liv.” Kate took my hand in hers. “It isn’t worth it.”

It is to me,I thought, but finally relented when Kate tugged on my hand.

I could confront my dad later, but if I turned my back on Kate now, I’d never forgive myself.

The tension in the room worsened once we reached the basement door. We made it most of the way down the stairwell when my dad’s voice boomed upstairs.

His words didn’t worry me half as much as the bitter scent coming from his wolf.

“Something’s wrong.”My wolf cowered.

Sensing my father’s anger as though it were my own, I paused, then cautiously placed my hand on Kate’s arm. “Stay here. I’ll get him leave, then come back to you.”

Kate didn’t let go. “Why is he so upset? Why is he here?”

“That’s what I’m hoping to find out.” With a breath, I ran the backs of my fingertips along her cheek and smiled. “He isn’t angry at you. He’s angry at me.”

“But why?”

“I’ll explain later. He won’t hurt you or Nora. I promise.”

Kate chewed her bottom lip. “I know I’m not a wolf, but if there’s something I’ve done–”

“Never,” I said, quick to reassure her. “You’ve given me so much joy these last few weeks. There’s nothing for you to apologize about.”

Something crashed upstairs, followed by a low growl.

Shit.

“Stay here,” I said as I pulled away from her. “I’ll be right back.”

I didn’t wait for a response, racing up the steps to help Nora who was facing off with my dad in the living room. I only made it so far.

As soon as I entered the kitchen, my dad was waiting for me.

“I’m glad to see you’ve come to your senses,” he said with his arms crossed in front of his chest. “Let’s go.”

I stepped away from him, out of reach.

“Now Liv!” The growl in his voice wasn’t his own.

“He’s going to shift,”my wolf warned, frantically pacing in the back of my mind as the telltale signs of my own shift started to take hold.
