Long-distance relationships were hard for any couple, but for one like ours? It sounded cruel.

“What Nora said last night about wolves not shifting in front of humans, you didn’t just do that out of trust, did you?” Kate asked once the silence had gone on for too long.

“How do you mean?” Maybe it was too early, but I wasn’t following.

“After you passed out last night, I couldn’t sleep, so I started thinking about how we met. Things have been so easy between us since the beginning. I know I mentioned my friends back home, but they were roommates or someone I had to be close to. It was never by choice, but with you, it’s different.

I don’t make friends that often, and in most cases, I wouldn’t have bothered making one here. But then you came along and… well… there’s only one explanation for it.”

“Which is?”

“Your wolf imprinted on me.” She sounded so sure of herself I almost believed her.

Almost.

“I wish that were true.”

“You don’t think it is?”

“Imprinting doesn’t work that way.” I exhaled hard. “Wolves imprint at a young age. We’re talking younger than I can remember.”

“But I’ve been here before,” Kate said, determined now. “Nora watched after me when I was little, so we still could’ve met back then.”

“After seeing the way my dad acted around Nora last night, I don’t think that’s possible. He seemed pretty unhappy to find me here.” Not to mention his poor behavior toward Kate and Nora.

“Maybe they aren’t friends now, but what about before? Don’t you think it’s weird how invested he was?”

“Well, yeah, sure. But–”

“Have you found anyone else?” Kate asked, her eyes locked with mine.

“Like you?” I shook my head, completely at a loss for words.

“Neither have I.” Kate dipped her head and clasped her hands in her lap.

“But humans don’t have fated mates.”

“As far as you know.” She smiled, but I could tell it was forced. “Come on, Liv. Even if it’s some wild fantasy or wishful thinking, it’s gotta be better than the alternative, right?”

I cupped her face with my hands and pressed her forehead to mine. “Better than letting you go?” I closed my eyes, fought back my tears, then held her close. “Yes. Yes, it is.”
