Chapter Fifteen

For the rest of the day, I couldn’t get Kate’s theory out of my head. Ithadbeen easy. Not only talking to her but spending time with her as well. All of my other relationships were messy and awkward, and while Kate and I hadn’t gotten to where we were without a push from my brother, our road hadn’t been nearly as difficult.

But a human and a wolf?Could it be true?

Was that why my dad had been so upset? Did he know?

There was only one way to find out, but I wasn’t about to waste my last day with Kate by going home.

So with my thoughts running a mile a minute and my heart caught someone in the back of my throat, I held Kate’s hand in mine and did my best to focus on the time we had left.

The wooded trails behind Nora’s house were the perfect getaway for someone like me. They weren’t big enough to call to my wolf but just enough to calm the nerves that had been crowding in my stomach. Or at least they were until I started counting down the hours until Kate’s departure.

Nineteen hours.

Nineteen hours to try and get up the nerve to tell her how I truly felt. I could’ve taken the easy way out. I could’ve admitted to imprinting on her even though we both knew it wasn’t true.

In the end, I held her hand in mine, laced our fingers together, and followed the trail in front of us.If only life could be this easy.Having a path to follow certainly would’ve helped. Then again, considering I was a wolf, maybe not.

“You’ve been quiet,” Kate said as a gentle breeze made its way beneath the canopy. “Is there anything I can do?”

I managed a watery smile, then arced my thumb over the back of her hand. “Just thinking about what you said before.”

“I didn’t mean to question you. I’ve just never felt this way before.”

“That makes two of us. Look, I know how hard this is going to be with you going back to school and everything, but I’d like to keep going. With us.” My cheeks burned under her intense gaze.

Kate’s footsteps were light as we continued down the trail. “There’d be a few rules.”

“Rules?” I was afraid to ask. “Like what?”

“You have to call me every day and write me every week. I don’t want to get emails from you. I want you to send me notes and postcards that are handwritten with stickers and stamps across the back. And flowers when it’s nice.”

“You can’t send flowers through the mail.” They’d get crushed.

“You know what I mean.”

“How about a wolf?”

“Stuffed or–” She bumped shoulders with me and laughed. “If you can fit it inside a box, sure.”

I imagined what it might be like to travel inside one of those wooden crates and shuddered. “Okay, so maybe not a wolf, but anything else?”

“I want you to bother me so much that I get tired of you.” She wrapped her arms around mine, then leaned into me seconds later.

“Tired of me?” I craned my neck so I could kiss the top of her head.

“You’re right. I don’t think it’s possible. I just don’t want us to make these promises, then ghost each other in a few weeks. So if calling is too hard, write. If you can’t do that, send me something else. Just don’t ditch me, okay?”

I stopped in the middle of the trail, lifted her chin with my hand, and smiled. “I won’t. Maybe in a few weeks, once things settle down, I can come and visit you.” I’d have to clear it with my folks, but if I could get through to my dad, then maybe–

“And then I’ll come here,” Kate finished for me. “We can take turns. I’m going to try to apply for classes once I get back, so I might be busy with schoolwork when you visit. But so long as you’re patient with me, I promise to give you as much of my time as I can.”

“Will you be changing your major?”
