“I need my rest.” Tension bunched in his shoulders, but he refused to look at me.

“It’ll only be a second.”

He let out a growl, then lowered onto the edge of his bed. “If this is about that girl–”

“What do you have against her?” I asked before he could finish. “Is it because she’s human?”

“No. Humans or wolves make no difference to me.”

“Is it because she’s a woman?” My throat tightened as I entered the room.

“No. Can we just–”

“Then what is it?” I asked while fisting my hands at my sides. “If it isn’t because she’s human and you don’t care about gender, then why–”

“Because I loved her, all right?” My father looked at me with fire in his eyes. Fire that quickly extinguished to show the sadness underneath. “I loved her.”

Her?I frowned. “What are you talking about?”

He let out a long breath, then stared at his callused hands.

“Mom?”

His shoulders dropped.

Wait a second.My heart dipped.No. It can’t be.

“Nora?” I bit back a growl.

My father flinched at the mention of her name.

“So, all this time, you’ve been forcing me into a mating I don’t want because of some missed opportunity? What the hell, Dad?”

“I couldn’t stand the thought of having her in my life after that. Keeping you apart was better for everyone involved.”

“That’s where you’re wrong.” And now that I knew the truth, I wasn’t about to let it go. “When did we meet?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

The hell it doesn’t.“When did we meet?” I asked again, my voice firm. “Did I imprint on her?”

His face paled. “How did you–”

“Kate figured it out. Can you believe it? A human figured it out before I did. And do you know why? Because you didn’t have the heart to tell me.” Fur bristled under my skin.

“Liv, please.” My mother stood in the doorway, her eyes full of worry.

“Did you know?” I turned on my heels and closed the distance between us.

“Liv, don’t talk to your mother that way.”

“Did you know?” Fury built inside my chest, and it took everything I had not to change.

“Yes.” My mother’s voice broke at the end. “But only this week. Liv, I promise–”

I shrunk away from her, then stormed out of the room.

“Where are you going?” my dad called after me as I neared the top of the steps. “The moon rises in two hours.”
