I could only hope.

Dinner usually took place inside our living room while talking about our day. Tonight, I mumbled something about not feeling well, took half a serving, then returned to my room. My folks wouldn’t question me. Dustin, on the other hand…

His scent reached me first, followed by a soft whisper outside my bedroom door. “Hey. Can I come in?”

“I’m not well,” I told him without getting out of bed.

“Whatever you have isn’t contagious.”

Sometimes I hate being a wolf.“Fine, but you can’t stay.” The door was already unlocked, so I didn’t even try to get up.

“Hey,” he whispered while peering into the darkness of my room. “Damn, you weren’t kidding. You look like shit.”

I grabbed one of the spare pillows behind me and threw it in his direction. It fell short. “Shut up.”

“I came to see if you needed anything.”

“You thought I was fibbing.” It wasn’t a question.

He shrugged, then lowered onto the other side of the bed. “It wouldn’t have been the first time, and we both know how cranky you get when you’re hungry.”

“I’m good, thanks.”

“Well, I’ll still leave this here in case you change your mind.”

“You aren’t going to lean in and kiss me on the forehead, are you? Because that would be weird.”

He leaned in andalmostkissed the top of my head before pulling away. Instead, he pressed his forehead to mine and smiled.

“Oh, and in case you didn’t know, that chick at the bakery is human, so–”

“She’s what?” I sat up and immediately wished I hadn’t. “Ugh.” I exhaled hard, wincing around the pain in my temples as I lay back down.

“Easy.”

“Now I know you’re making shit up.”

“No, no. Dad confirmed it. Apparently, Nora had a human as her roommate in college. Dad even met her once, I think. Anyway, according to my sources–”

“Sources being the bits of information you got by eavesdropping on Mom and Dad.”

“Doesn’t matter how I get my information. In any case, the two of them are still in touch and meet up from time to time.”

“I understand how you know this, but how does Dad know it?”

“Not sure. Maybe he heard it from someone else. I just thought you might like to know.”

“Yeah. Thanks.”

“Kind of wild when you think about it, huh? I mean, humans and wolves coexist and all that, but having a werewolf as your godmother?” Dustin let out a low whistle, then got up to leave. “Will you be okay? I can stay if you’d like.”

Given the way he was hovering, he obviously wanted me to say yes.

“Yeah,” I said while rearranging my pillows. “I think I am. Thanks for checking on me. And for this.” I gestured at the extra plate of food he’d placed by my bed.

“Anytime. I’m down the hall if you need me, and I can always be reached by text. Love you,” he said as he opened my door.

“Love you too.” I waited until the door closed behind him, then turned on my bedside lamp so I could grab my phone.

It was about time I found out who this Kate really was.
