Chapter Seventeen

Bits of sunlight filtered in through the blinds, dancing across my eyelids enough for me to wake. Unlike when I stayed at Nora’s, Kate’s scent was all around me. It was in the carpeting, my hair, and the blankets thrown over top of me. In fact, if I had to guess, it was probably in my fur as well. However, by the look of things, I hadn’t been in my pelt for a few hours.

Realizing I was naked yet again, I held the covers up close to my chin and smiled.

I found her.

We’dfound her. And even though there’d be hell to pay once I got home, no one could find me here.

Shit. Dustin. My heart plummeted into my stomach.

In my early morning delirium, I’d forgotten all about him.

What if he followed me? What if he’s still out there?

Icy panic coiled around the base of my spine.

Oh god. I’m going to be sick.

Fearing the worst, I threw off the covers and ran down the hall to my right. I made it just inside Kate’s bathroom door when all hell broke loose. My mouth salivated. My legs buckled under the pressure.

Kneeling in front of the toilet, I pushed the lid out of my way, clutched my stomach, and waited. Wave after wave of nausea surged up my throat, but nothing ever happened.

Gasping for breath, I lay with my head on the side of the tub.I have to find him.If my brother was still out there… if he got caught, I’d never forgive myself.

“Liv?” Kate’s voice was muffled on the other side of the door. “Are you okay?”

Oh no.The room felt as though it were swinging side to side even though I was perfectly still.

“Can I come in?” Kate waited a moment, then slowly opened the door. “Oh god, what’s happened?” she asked as she dropped to my side. “You look horrible.”

I coughed to get the air moving from my lungs. “You should see the other guy.”

“Here. Come on. Let’s get you up.” She offered me her hand, but I didn’t move.

“Your phone. I…” I wet my lips and tried again with more success. “Please. It’s Dustin. I need to make sure he’s okay.”

“Dustin?” There was no mistaking the concern in her voice. “Okay. Give me one second.” She squeezed my hand, then rushed out of the room.

Footsteps echoed down the hall, mimicking the erratic beat of my heart.

When she returned, I wasn’t any better.

“Here,” Kate said as she reentered the room.

Hands shaking, I pulled up the screen and fumbled with the numbers. “Shit!” I took a breath and tried again. When that didn’t work, I handed Kate the phone and rambled off my brother’s number before taking it back.

Someone picked up on the second ring.

“Before you say anything, let me explain.”

“Liv?”

Oh thank god.Cool relief washed over me at the sound of his voice.
