“Kate?” He grumbled something under his breath. “What’s she doing at the house?”

“We aren’t at the house.”God. Why is it so hard talking to you?“I went to see her.”

“You went to–”

“Hey baby,” Mom said, having taken the phone from him. “Are you okay?”

“Yes. I’m okay.”

“You had us worried sick. When Dustin told us you’d run off–”

“I’m sorry,” I apologized. “I didn’t mean to frighten you. I was just upset.”

“But everything’s okay?” my mom pried.

“Yeah. It’s okay. I’m safe.”

Mom let out a breath, then released a nervous laugh. “I guess we’ll have to meet her then.”

My heart skipped at that. At the thought of my mom meeting Kate for the first time.

“Where are you?” I asked when my mom didn’t say anything.

“We’re heading into New Jersey now.”

New Jersey? That means they’re coming here.“Nora told you where Kate lives, didn’t she?”

“We were worried.”

Great. Just great.“Look, I’m fine if you want to meet, but not here. It’s her space, you know?”

“How about the diner? There’s one two blocks down the road.” No doubt my mom had pulled up a map before they left the house.

“A diner would be fine.”

“We’ll be there in about an hour.”

Perfect,I thought as I hung up the phone. I had one hour to get my shit together and to find some clothes.

No problem.

No problem at all.
