“About?” Kate reached behind her for a towel, then wrapped it around me.

“Us.” I exhaled hard and hugged the bit of cloth to my chest. “You were right. You’ve been right all along.”

“What do you mean?”

“My wolf imprinted on you.” My words came out in a growl. “I don’t know when it happened or how, but it’s all true.”

“How?” Kate drew back so she could meet my gaze. “Who told you this?”

“My dad.”

“If he knew, why keep it from you?”

“That’s the messed up part. Apparently, Nora and my dad used to be friends. He had a thing for her and I guess she turned him down.”

“Oh wow.” Kate stared at me with disbelief. “That’s a lot to take in.”

“Right? Anyway, I kind of lost it last night, and well–”

“You should’ve called.”

“I know. I thought about that after I reached the city, but then it was too late.” I paused, then started to get up. “I’m sorry. I should go. I’ve already gotten you in enough trouble as it is.”

She chewed her bottom lip, then took me in her arms. “You can’t run from them forever. Take it from someone who only had one parent growing up. Whatever’s going on, having them in your life will still be worlds better than going without.”

“I…” I didn’t know what to say. “My father can be pretty strict.”

“So I’ve noticed. But is that such a bad thing? He’s only trying to protect you, isn’t he?”

“And himself.”

“Guarding your heart isn’t wrong. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. But then, this strange wolf found me and I let her in. It’s okay, Liv, really.”

“I don’t want them here.” This was her safe space. If I took that away from her–

“Then meet them,” Kate said, oblivious to my thoughts. “Call them.” She emphasized the words and gestured at the phone. “The longer you put it off, the worse it’s going to get. That’s what you told me before, remember?”

“Yeah, and now I hate you for it,” I said with a half-smile.

“You can thank me later.”

“You aren’t going to stay?” I asked as she got up to leave.

“And make you more nervous than you already are? I’ll pass, thanks. I’ll be out here when you’re done. Any thoughts on what you’d like to have for breakfast?”

“Uh… just water for now.” Given the way my stomach turned then, there was no way I’d be able to keep anything down.

Kate nodded her understanding, then closed the door behind her.

Alone with my thoughts, I stared at her cell, dialed my mom, then tried my dad when she didn’t answer.

“Hello?” my dad’s gruff voice answered on the other side of the line. “Who is this? How did you get my number?”

“Hey dad.”

“Liv?” My dad paused, likely to share the news with my mom. “Where are you? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, Dad. I…” I trailed off and glanced at the bathroom door. “I’m with Kate.”
