Then the melody died down to a hush, with Declan playing the last few chords, his eyes opening slowly to look out into the viewing area, Andi’s eyes on him in utter disbelief as Declan played the last few chords by himself and he looked her dead in the eye as he sang the last verse of the song solo.

“Cause I’m still in love

With the girl with the rebel heart

You were looking at the world,

But I only had eyes for you.”

Claps rang out throughout the studio when they finished and Declan felt elated as he looked over to where Andi had been standing just to see her walk out the door and his heart sank further than it had ever sunk before.

But he faked a grin and chatted away with the presenter before it was time for them to do their cover song. It hadn’t been easy picking the song but they had thrown all the options into a hat and in the end, it was Luna’s choice that was chosen and Declan just had to sing Paramore’sThe Only Exception, the words cutting him with every word he sang as all he wanted to do was to chase after Andi.

He went through the motions and the show ended, and Declan and the band were left alone for a few minutes as Luna came up and threw her arms around him. “Oh, Dec. I’m sorry. I can’t believe Andi just walked out.”

“Are you gonna just let her walk away, again?” Rhys demanded from behind his keyboard.

“I think your sister made her decision. I laid it all out and she still fucking ran.”

“You ever think maybe she wants you to run after her? For a smart man, you can be a fuckin’ idiot sometimes.”

Declan was quiet all the way back to the hotel, even though he should be walking on air right now. All the band’s dreams were coming true and they were finally exactly where they had wanted to be but he couldn’t help the morose feeling in his chest.

Maybe this was what he deserved after everything, to finally be upfront about his feelings for Andi, and after last night, he had sensed a shift between them, that gave him hope, for it to be ripped away in a public way and now every time he sang the word to Rebel Heart, it would be a gut punch.

Karma had found her way to swing back around and she really was a bitch.
