Chapter6

The dark man in front of me held out a hand, but I ignored it as I pushed myself up. My papers and cardigan were lying limply on the bathroom floor, but I couldn’t bring myself to pick them up.

The pool of blood had touched some of the papers, and the entire stack seemed tainted now.

Besides, there was nothing there I didn’t have backed up in multiple places.

What I needed was a phone. To call the police. To end this nightmare of a day. Even though I stood on my own, the dark one grabbed my arm. It could have been to steady me or to keep me from running. Hard to tell.

“Where can you call to these police of yours?”

His voice was so low I could feel the vibrations in my chest.

He seemed dangerous even before he killed someone right in front of me. Now he was downright terrifying.

Right now, it took everything in me to stop myself from falling apart in panic.

As it was, my entire body trembled.

By the time I remembered I’d been asked a question, the dark one had moved on. “Xian, you know where to meet me,” he said to his friend before he led me out of the bathroom.

Except he pulled me toward the back entrance, away from the crowds of people I knew and could call to for help.

“I need a phone to call the police,” I mumbled pitifully as we reached the back door.

“Where is one of these phones?”

Was he just messing with me now?Once we were outside, I took a deep breath of the crisp air. The sun had gone down and now the dim lights at the back of the bar illuminated the smokers. One of whom was scrolling through their phone as they passed the time.

“Like that.” I pointed to the guy. “If we go back inside, one of the other professors will let me use theirs.”

The man looked between the smoker and the door for a moment as though contemplating the choice before simply reaching out and grabbing the phone.

“What the fuck, du—”

The dark one let out a growl and, I shit you not, the ground started to tremble. That had to be my imagination, right?

As soon as the smoker saw the dark one, he physically took a step back.

The phone was abruptly put into my hand. “Make your call, female.”

Part of me couldn’t believe that he’d actually given me a phone. The other part didn’t want to give him a chance to change his mind.

I dialed 9-1-1 and brought the phone to my ear. The entire time, those silver eyes studied me. Was he worried I was going to tell the police to arrest him? For that matter, why was he so calm about me calling the cops?

Maybe he thought what he did was to save my life. And he had saved my life. As horrifying as the whole thing had been, he hadn’t hurt me.

“9-1-1. What’s your emergency?”

Oh, hell. Where did I start?“I’m on Kennyon campus at Mr. G’s bar. A man attacked me in the bathroom and now he’s dead.” That seemed like an oversimplification.

Luckily, the operator did better under pressure than I did. “Okay, ma’am, dispatchers are on their way. Are you alone?”

“No, I’m with the guy who saved me.”

“And what’s his name?”

“King Jaiden of the Unseelie kingdom,” said the man without pause.
