Chapter5

I’d expected my female to be a bit more grateful. Instead, she was making herself as small as possible as her wide, brown eyes communicated her fear loud and clear.

Afraid of me? I was the one who heard her scream and ended the foolish man who thought to touch what was mine. Not just touch. HURT.

If I hadn’t forgotten myself, I would’ve kept him alive to make him suffer a much worse fate.

Maybe that was what was wrong. She expected me to avenge her better. To make him suffer more. How foolish of me.

Before I could think of a way to make it up to her, Xian appeared in the doorway. “Seriously?” he asked as he looked at the carnage on the floor.

I shrugged. “He was weak,” was all I said. I wasn’t going to explain myself to my own general. We’d planned to come in and get out of the mortal realm without causing much fuss. Killing a man was most certainly fuss.

And still, I couldn’t bring myself to care.

“We’re taking her away from here. Make sure we’re not followed,” I ordered as I approached my woman.

She pressed herself flat against the wall as though trying to get away from me.

“None of that,” I warned as I reached her and knelt in front of the woman. “Tell me your name, human.”

Her breasts rose and fell with each heavy breath, and I didn’t hide my interest. What would her body look like as I peeled back the layers of the clothing concealing those luscious mounds?

I felt a sudden rush of resentment. I was king. Who was she to hide herself from me? Once she was in my castle, I’d order her to go naked at all times. So I would always be able to gaze upon what was mine.

Unable to help myself, I reached out and touched her leg. Just the barest brush of my fingers over the tight, thick material of her skirt. Though it did nothing to show off her figure, my mouth watered at the thought of peeling it off and revealing all of those curves...

The moment I came into contact, the woman jumped and leapt back, not that she could go far with the wall right behind her.

I chuckled at the reaction. It had been so long since the fae had ventured into the mortal realm. Of course she would be frightened. Though I would have expected that fear to make her more obedient. “Give me your name, female. Don’t make me ask again.”

She blinked as though coming out of a trance, and her eyes met mine. Her hair and skin was light and sun-kissed, but her eyes were dark depths I could lose myself in.

The eyes of an Unseelie queen.

Once again I was filled with the knowledge that this was right. This female was mine.

“Raina Gunter,” she said, the words barely more than a whisper.

“Raina,” I repeated, tasting the name in my mouth like I wanted to taste her body. “Let’s leave here. You’re obviously distressed, and my general will take care of the mess.”

Her gaze roamed to the dead human, and I shifted to keep it from her view. She was obviously a delicate one who needed to be protected from such violent sights.

That was fine with me. As long as she was my queen, she’d never have to worry about being manhandled like that unworthy waste of flesh had been doing.

“Raina,” I repeated firmly. “It’s time to leave here.”

She shook her head.

The novelty of her indifference to my orders was quickly becoming frustrating.

“I’m not going anywhere with you. I need to call the police.”

Police...I searched my mind for the translation of the word. The magic allowing me to converse in the language of the local humans here was limited, and it had been centuries since I’d last set foot on mortal soil. Through context, I assumed they were some type of authority. “I’ll let you call the police if you allow me to escort you home.”

I held my breath as her dark eyes digested my offer.

“Fine,” she finally said, and I held out my hand.

“It’s a deal then.”

She stared at me as if I were crazy but nonetheless she met my handshake.

There were many ways to seal a deal. A drop of blood. A sacrifice. A kiss. Mortals liked to use a simple touch.

It was clear to me that Raina was just agreeing to get herself out of this situation.

But she’d never made a deal with the fae before...
