Chapter7

Ipassed through each room of the house Xian commandeered for us. By human standards, it was fine.

They had certainly come a long way from the dregs they survived in the last time I’d been to the mortal realm.

For one, there was indoor plumbing. And access to warm water.

In the Land of Fae, it was easy enough to heat water through means of magic. It was a shame the humans had to work so hard for everything.

But there was a well-stocked kitchen, sitting room, large eating area, and four bedrooms.

One of the rooms contained all of the humans. Xian had put them to sleep, where they would stay out of our way.

My Raina had raised quite a fuss when she learned this. Not that I understood why. I thought she’d be grateful I hadn’t killed them. That would certainly have been easier.

She had a gentle heart. That would make her a good mother, but she would have to harden up a bit before she became queen.

We were going to stay in the master bedroom of the house, and Xian would stand guard. I wanted alone time with my future bride, and the fae could go long periods without rest if needed. Though Xian would have to control the use of his magic. The connection to the Fade was stretched thin here, and it would take longer for his magic to replenish.

After finishing my rounds through the house, I made my way to the master bedroom. Logically, I knew my Raina would be ready and raring for a fight once I entered.

But I allowed my mind to wander. What if she was waiting eagerly for my arrival? After a hard day of meetings and politics, she’d be ready and willing to relieve my stress.

I’d enter my room, the one in my castle, and she’d be stretched languorously on the bed. She would have gotten bored so she’d be doing something to entertain herself.

What did Mia like to do in her spare time? She liked weapons and fighting. My Raina was a more delicate sort. Maybe she’d be reading or painting. But naked, of course.

I’d walk in and she’d immediately turn around, a bright smile quickly turning to one of wicked desire.

I would usually take my time to wash up and start my night routine, but all thoughts of routine would fly from my mind as she leaned back on her elbows, pressing her generous breasts out to tempt me.

And tempt me she did. Even now, in her anger and impudence, something drew me to her.

I needed to claim her before we went back to the Land of Fae. After seeing how Kier had been compromised after bonding with Mia, I had to find a way to escape Melusine’s mechanisms.

I expected to find a fight when I entered the room, but instead, I found nothing at all. The drab space had beige walls and a blue, floral blanket on the bed. No Raina.

My paranoid mind thought she might be hiding with a weapon, ready to pounce on me, but I didn’t see any obvious place for her to tuck herself away.

She could be under the bed, but that seemed childish, even for someone as indignant as Raina. Also, it was a terrible location to ambush someone from.

I crossed to the window, but my wall of vines was still in place. She was still in here somewhere.

Which left the still closed bathroom door. I tried the handle but it was locked. I could use magic to open it, but why bother? She’d just try to lock me out again.

So I twisted the handle, using my strength to snap the locking mechanism and break the wood.

Now the door wouldn’t even latch. Well, Raina had no one to blame but herself for that one. Though I was sure she’d beg to differ.

I entered the washing room to find Raina curled up on the floor, lying on a bed of towels. The stiffness in her body told me she was wide awake.

“This seems excessive. Now shower and come to bed like a good human.”

She didn’t turn to face me. “Everything about you is excessive.”

She wasn’t wrong about that.

“I’ve been taken against my will by some demon. I’m not getting naked in the same house as you, and I’m sure as hell not sleeping in the same bed.”
