He let me go but didn’t move away. “I don’t know in your terms. Maybe two hundred miles from where we started. It’s secluded and easier to guard than our previous residence.”

“And you’re not going to hurt the owners?”

He shook his head. “I know it would upset you.”

“But otherwise you wouldn’t care?”

A muscle in his jaw ticced, and I had a feeling I didn’t want to know the answer. “For a majority of my life, humans have been thought of as...pests. And treated as such.”

“And entertainment,” I muttered.

“After the Seelie magic went wrong, almost all fae women were killed. It was only recently we discovered that we were biologically compatible with your kind.”

“And you’re having kids with pests like us now?”

“I wouldn’t choose just any pest. I have been here for days, and you’re the first woman who even stirred my interest. I saw you and knew... I knew you were special.”

I snorted. “Wow. It took you a whole few days. I’m flattered.”

“I can’t explain things I don’t understand. But I know that when I saw you, something was different. This was always going to happen.”

“And if I say no?”

He took a deep breath before letting out a resigned sigh. “I’m not letting you go. I can’t.”

“Because you’re a king and you’re used to always getting what you want?”

“Because the idea of letting you walk away kills me. You have no idea the lengths I’d go through to get you back.”

I wouldn’t have believed him if the words hadn’t sounded ripped from his throat. How was he saying such terrible things to me and sounding vulnerable at the same time?

There was nothing I could really say to that. How did one fight with a possessive fae king?

I thought back to the dream woman.Surrender.I looked up to Jaiden’s face and was taken aback by how close he was.Had I really been pressed up against him for hours?

The smell that had clung to his shirt surrounded me. Forest and ashes. The sun was going down, and we were in the shade of the large house, but his gray eyes were so bright they glowed. Tentatively, I reached up, running my fingers along his jaw, going higher until I reached the tip of a pointed ear. “Is this okay?” I asked tentatively, belatedly realizing I should have asked before I touched him.

“You can touch any part of me. You always have permission.”

He said it so sincerely. It was as though the man sitting next to me was totally different from the one who had trapped me in that alley to inform me that life as I knew it was over.

How was I supposed to reconcile the two?

The moment was heated, and the tension surrounded me. Xian would be back any moment, and I wanted to hold on to this sensation while I could. And that’s when I kissed him.
