“Every fae is born equal. With a minute connection to the Fade. If we study and practice consistently, we can foster a stronger connection to that power. I will admit that some have more affinity than others, but I devoted my entire life to becoming the strongest of my kind. My generals, likewise, have devoted themselves to fostering their own strength.”

“How do you become connected to the Fade?”

“Practice. Discipline. Pain. It’s not an easy process and requires constant upkeep.” And I could feel it weakening by the day that I’d been here. Not that I’d admit it to Raina—at least, not yet.

“I didn’t realize,” she muttered. “It sounds kind of like me. My parents were both very smart and respected in their fields, but I still had to work my ass off to get to where I am.”

“And what is it you do?”

She bit her lip and considered me. “You’re actually curious now?”

“I’ve always been curious. You piqued my interest from the moment you ran into me.”

“I have a PhD in quantum physics. It’s... I mean, a lot of humans don’t really understand what it means. I study atoms, one of the smallest units that make up physical matter, and their relationship to the world around them.”

I nodded, even though her words meant very little to me.

“For example, there’s a way of creating energy called nuclear power. In its most basic terms, if you take the inside of one of the very tiniest units of matter, the nucleus of an atom, and cause it to separate, it creates this giant blast of energy. Enough to power entire cities or destroy them, depending on how you harness that energy. So in a way, it’s human magic. Can be wonderful. Can be terrible. The most important thing is that we understand it, and that’s why I devoted my life to learning about it.”

Raina’s dark eyes studied me, as though unsure how I’d react to her words. I didn’t know what she expected, but I was unable to stop myself.

I closed the distance between us and kissed her.
