Immediately, the woman from my dream came to mind. It was her. I just knew.

“Without women, we will die. We might be immortal but we’re not impervious. We needed a way to create our future. The discovery that we’re compatible with human women was a revelation. We brought three of your females over for breeding, but there were issues.”

“I’m guessing you didn’t ask them nicely.”

His hands gripped my thighs as though he thought I might bolt. “We threatened the government and they gave in to our demands. They didn’t treat the females they selected well. Melusine imagined we were just getting a new species of women to destroy. So she cursed the fae and human females.”

I had a million questions but I waited for him to continue.

“To protect the humans, she decreed that whenever a fae took a bride, a mate bond would form.”

“A what?”

“A mate bond. It’s something that has been known to occur with various beings, but never with fae. Not until now, at least. It’s a connection between the couple. Emotions and even life forces become intertwined.”

My thumb stroked back and forth on his chest while I considered what he said. “By life force, you mean if one dies, the other dies?”

“In a way. More like they lose the will to live. Eventually their heart will cease to beat.”

“So, this way, your men won’t beat or abuse the women they’re stealing.”

Abruptly Jaiden sat up, as though my hand was doing nothing to hold him down. His arms came around my back and held me close as our chests pressed together. His face was so close to mine, and as I looked down at him, all I could think of was how beautiful he was.

“I will never hurt you,” he vowed. “As long as you’re with me, you will be safe and protected.”

He said it as though I could choose to leave. Though he had made it abundantly clear that I had no choice but to stay with him.

“You vow to protect me, but you are doing everything in your power to avoid this bond that is supposed to be for my protection.”

“I am king. I need to be in control of myself.”

“And if you ever had to choose between my happiness and what you think is best for your kingdom, you need a clear head. So maybe don’t keep spewing all these false promises about vowing to protect me.”

The world turned into a blur as he flipped me onto my back, where he could rise over me. “False promises?” he snarled. “You think I lie?”

“I think you’re lying to yourself,” I said calmly, as though I didn’t have a terrifying fae pinning me to the bed.

“You don’t believe I can make you happy?”

I snorted and rolled my eyes. “Can you make me happy? Maybe. But it’s not going to be your priority. So don’t act like it is.”

He paused as he thought about it. “Are you a virgin?”

I blinked in surprise. “Excuse me?”

“The first women we brought over were virgins. We were told that virginity wouldn’t make a difference, though, so I never confirmed with you.”

Rage coursed through me, and I shoved and bucked at Jaiden, though he didn’t budge. “Get off me, you fae oaf!”

He took hold of my wrists as though I were nothing more than an inconvenience, and pinned them to either side of me. “Be calm, female.”

“Be less of an ass, male,” I shot back. “What, you think because I’ve had a dick inside of me, I’m less of a woman or something? You can take your archaic notions and shove them right up your magical commitment-phobe ass!”

“Be still!” he shouted, so close to my face that I could feel the rush of hair against my face.

It was rude but effective. Jaiden had been so soft with me over the past day that I forgot exactly how powerful he was. I was now intensely aware of this otherworldly being pinning me down.

“No one else will ever touch you. Tell me.”
