After I put some distance in, I could make a more detailed plan.

Make it to the car. Drive fast. Don’t crash.

“Now!” barked Jaiden as he opened the door and we emerged.

The sun had started to set but the glow of the fire in the woods to the east cast an eerie glow on the yard.

I wanted to look all around for danger, but knew that Jaiden and Xian were already doing that. My job was to get to the car and get out of the way so I wouldn’t be a distraction.

That was my job, and that was what I was going to do. I ran as fast as my bare feet could take me. The fae could surely go faster, but they matched my pace.

Once I reached the car, I forced my mind to remain focused. I wasn’t going to turn around to give Jaiden a goodbye. I wasn’t going to kiss him. I wasn’t going to argue that I should stay.

As soon as I sat in the driver’s seat, someone shut the door. I turned the key in the ignition and finally allowed myself to look up to meet Jaiden’s gaze.

I should be overwhelmed with freedom. Gratefulness I was getting away from this arrogant, dangerous otherworldly creature. So why did I feel as though I was doing something wrong? Why did I feel like separating from him would only lead to grief?

I knocked the gear shift into reverse. It was a stick shift, which I wasn’t used to, but could manage.

There was a level of comfort to the methodical release and compression of the clutch. I didn’t know what I was leaving the fae to face without me, but I couldn’t worry about it.Compress, higher gear, slowly release. The woods around me cast dark shadows over the road, and the adrenaline racing through my nerves kept me on high alert. My knuckles were tight on the ten and two positions.

The road curved and twisted, which made me hit the brakes more than I would’ve liked. I bet that the boys were searching aimlessly through the woods and not finding anything. We’d overreacted. It was just one of those random giant explosions. No big deal.

I went down another tight curve and was blinded by lights. I slammed on the brakes and the car started to swerve to the side as it skidded to a stop.

There was a police roadblock blocking any possible exit. As men in full body armor, holding assault weapons, surrounded the car, all I could think was that I never should’ve left Jaiden.
