Chapter13

“Let me destroy the creatures,” said Xian as we surveyed what had caused so much damage.

It was clearly not a creature at all but one of those damnable technological weapons that humans were so fond of using.

Turning fire against a fae—were they mad? “No. I don’t want it destroyed. Seran is behind this.”

“You think he has turned to toys to defeat us?”

“I think he uses every advantage he can get.” I focused on the flying machine above us and called the air to me, overcoming the natural propulsion of the mechanical beast until it crashed right at our feet.

There were three more buzzing around the place. Xian and I observed the carnage once I’d brought them all down. Each of the flying machines was about four feet long and appeared to have enough firepower to cause quite a bit of damage, considering the state of the burning foliage all around us.

“I don’t sense any magic,” said Xian finally as he kept his eyes on the horizon for any approaching threats.

“Same here,” I admitted. Which didn’t make me feel better about any of this. Actually, it made me feel worse.

“It could be the human armies. We didn’t leave on good terms the last time we met with them.”

That was putting it mildly. The last time we’d engaged with human military was when Kier crossed over and, in the matter of an hour, had the ruling families of the largest countries on Earth at his mercy. It was only after they agreed to supply us with women that we relented.

Their anger was understandable. But why would they think they had any better chance against us now? Although these flying weapons were charming, they weren’t a threat.

Humans might be stupid, but they weren’t that stupid. “This isn’t an attack. This is a distraction.”

Xian straightened his shoulders, never letting his guard down. He had undoubtedly come to the same conclusion. “What are they distracting us from then?”

There were plenty of options, but only one possibility weighed on my mind. “Raina.”
