And right now my wits were all I had.

I made my way back to the entrance but didn’t hear any footsteps following. They could very well still be watching, though. Before I got to work, I cleared the room of all cameras I saw by covering them with whatever debris I could locate.

There was no way to know if I’d gotten them all, but I’d done my best. Based on how I was being ignored and the soldiers were walking with purpose whenever they went by, it was obvious that there were bigger fish—or fae, in this case—to fry.

Seran was convinced that Jaiden was going to come for me, but I wasn’t going to sit around and wait for a fae king who had made his noncommittal feelings very well known.

I wandered around until I found all of the necessary supplies: a screwdriver, an armful of sticky tape, and scissors.

It took a few adjustments to allow the mechanism to release the catalyst into the other chemicals to cause the explosive reaction. I required a way to activate the weapon while on the go but it also needed to be secure enough to not blow up in my hand.

This meant I would need a lot more water bottles, though.

I drank half of one and then just started to pour the rest out on the ground. Water damage wasn’t high on my list of concerns.

After collecting another armful of water bottles from the breakroom, I returned back to my workstation, only to see Seran sitting in my chair, looking over what I’d accomplished so far.

Would he be able to figure out what I was planning? It wasn’t as if fae would ever know how to make bombs. Their entire bodies were bombs.

“I like your arts and crafts station.”

Good, because one of those crafts had his name in big, bold letters. It would probably be better if I didn’t say that out loud. “Thank goodness. Your approval means everything to me.”

“I sense dishonesty.”

I was about to come back with some smartass remark when he reached behind his back and pulled out a wickedly sharp golden blade.

My breath caught, and I abruptly remembered where I was. This was a prison, and I was his hostage. Even if I’d had some level of freedom, I couldn’t forget that he was the most dangerous being here.

“Come here, Raina,” he ordered.

“I’d rather—”

A rush of wind came from behind and knocked me forward onto my hands and knees.

Before I could even try to get up, the blade was under my chin and directing my face up to meet his gaze.

“I don’t know what you’re playing at, but you don’t stand a chance against me, mortal. Do you understand?”

I took a nervous gulp, the subtle movement shoving the tip further into the vulnerable skin of my neck.

“Are you here to threaten me or did you want something?” I asked, my voice extra small to keep my throat from moving more than necessary.

“I actually did want something,” he said, removing his blade finally. “Give me your hand.”

He wasn’t asking. What would happen if I refused? I didn’t want to give the crazy man with a weapon any part of my body.

But Jaiden had proved that fae got what they wanted. My best chance of getting out of here was to finish working on these bombs and to do that, I needed Seran to go away. I lifted up my hand, the palm shaking.

In the blink of an eye, he snatched my wrist and ran the blade over the skin. It was so sharp that I barely felt it at first.

Then the pain raced up my nerves, and I snatched my hand back. Blood rolled down my arm.

“What was that?!” I couldn’t be too surprised. He was obviously insane. However, the pain was making me irritable and taking away some of my rationality.

“Just a precaution.” He leaned forward and pressed a clear vial against my arm to collect a few drops of blood. “You never know when some blood will come in handy.”

A fae with access to my blood? Exactly how dangerous was that? “What are you going to do?”
