Chapter19

Dikie’s transportation spell was disorienting, and I couldn’t afford the distraction.

We arrived in an unknown location and were immediately under attack.

It didn’t take long to ascertain they were human weapons. The moment one of the projectiles tore through my shoulder, I realized what was happening.

Xian called fire to encircle us. It offered no protection from the attack but they could no longer aim.

Kier and I dropped to the ground and channeled our power through the earth, causing the ground to tremble beneath us.

Mia used her bow and arrow to fire off cover shots.

From the sounds of the screams, Kier had made a lot of progress on her training.

A gust of air hit us so hard that the fire went out and the four of us were each pushed back.

The shooting had stopped, and a dark silence fell over us.

It was the first chance I had to observe where we’d landed. An ominous building stood in front of us, and a fence topped with sharp wire was to our backs. It would be enough to keep a human in, but nothing when it came to a fae.

This was made to keep Raina in. Not me out.

Which meant Seran wanted me to come here.

There were still humans on the high ground, aiming their projectile weapons at us, but they’d stopped firing. Kier stood in front of Mia to protect her from bullets, though she had a bow loaded and ready to fire.

The door to the drab building opened, and I could feel the energy flowing out before I saw the other fae.

My light counterpart. The fae I was going to kill.

If that wasn’t already predetermined, it was set in stone when I saw Raina following behind him.

She wasn’t in chains or bindings of any sort, but her eyes were wide and fearful, though still calculating and analyzing. Her clothes had been changed, and there was blood on the oversized, rough human clothing she wore.

Why the fuck was she in new clothes? The ground around us trembled while roots started to reach out of the ground to curl at our feet.

I made a motion for my group to stand back. Everyone knew that the number-one priority was to get Raina out alive. As soon as we had an opening, whoever had an opportunity would grab her and transport her back to Dikie before we all went back to the Land of Fae together.

But with the only other fae as powerful as I standing in the way, it wouldn’t be easy.

Seran knew he had me where he wanted me, and his smile made my stomach twist in knots.

“My king,” he spat out.

I forced myself to keep my eyes on him when all I wanted to do was stare at Raina until I could convince myself she was okay.

“You’ve gone through a lot of trouble to get to me. State your purpose.”

He tossed his head back and barked out a laugh. “Giving me demands. Really?”

I shrugged. “Old habits and whatnot. You knew I would come for the human. So state your goal.”

“Come for your human...” he repeated. He reached behind him, never looking away from me, as he grabbed the back of Raina’s neck and pulled her next to him. His claws pressed so hard into her neck that a trickle of blood started to flow.

She winced but didn’t make a sound.

The plants at my feet trembled and vibrated, as I worked to keep control.
