Chapter22

The next week was undoubtedly the strangest week of my life, yet I couldn’t remember a time I’d ever felt so content.

There was never a dull moment. Jaiden would wake me up far too early for my liking (apparently humans required more sleep than the fae) and wouldn’t leave until we were both sweaty and sated.

Then he’d be pulled away to do whatever a fae king did. I was becoming slowly more familiar with his duties, between managing his armies and maneuvering shaky political waters.

Even though Jaiden was the biggest and baddest fae around, he still cared about his people’s quality of life. It was an admirable quality. Really.

Except for the fact that his constituents were driving me insane.

For the most part, everyone at the castle was lovely. The elves loved using me as their own personal dress-up doll. Jaiden said I had no budget limit for my wardrobe, but I was never known for my sense of style. When I’d asked the elven servants to help, they’d taken it and ran.

I might be a future queen, but at times it felt as though my army of girls was in charge of me.

I didn’t have much interaction with the warriors. They didn’t sleep in the castle, and I spent very little time on the training grounds. Whenever I did pass them, they’d respectfully greet me and then leave. Not big conversationalists, but not rude either, which worked great for my introverted personality.

The generals were around a lot more than the base warriors. Kier was polite enough, but he didn’t seem to care about anyone who wasn’t his Mia. It was adorable how obsessed with her he was.

Jaiden was powerful and strong, but Kier had an extra darkness about him. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but it made me much more comfortable to know that he was a softie for his Mia.

Wolfe and Radien, the other two generals, stared at me constantly. Only when they thought I wasn’t looking, of course.

I’d always see them sneaking hidden glances out of the corner of my eye. I just couldn’t figure out why.

Were they simply curious about the new human woman?

Or were they disapproving of my presence?

And that’s where I got to Jaiden’s people, who drove me crazy.

From what I could tell, there were two factions of Unseelie: Those who thought the fae should die out before they lower themselves to breed with us lowly humans. And those who could see the benefits of mixing the bloodlines, but thought it should be done with the humans in chains and subjugated.

Neither of those factions wanted me as their queen.

The worst part was that I agreed. I wouldn’t want some outsider to come in and suddenly become be one of my rulers. When I told Jaiden that I’d be happy as a royal mistress or whatever, he’d ripped off my dress and went down on me until I forgot what the word “queen” even meant.

To distract myself from the political turmoil I had no say in, I stuck to what I knew best. Academia.

The royal library was massive, and Jaiden had introduced me to Albor, the fae in charge of the ancient tomes and literature.

Most people’s eyes glazed over as soon as I started to talk about physics, especially once I passed the surface level. Albor, however, was fascinated, and we’d spend hours comparing the natural rules between Earth and Land of Fae.

We would get so involved in these chats that I wouldn’t even realize the sun had set until Jaiden came up behind me, wrapping me tightly in his embrace.

I screamed at the unexpected cuddle. “Damn it,” I muttered even as I relaxed into his arms. “I need to put a bell on you.”

He nuzzled my neck, his stubble tickling me and turning me on at the same time. “Do you normally put bells on people?”

Albor gave a shrug, as if to say he had no idea either.

“Don’t worry about it. Are you here to drag me away?”

“If I didn’t, you would be trapped in this library for days.”

Hard to argue with that. “There’s a lot to learn!”

“And you will be able to learn it all tomorrow,” he promised as he started to pull me back.
