“We’re not done with this conversation!” I called to Albor while Jaiden held the back of my neck to guide me back to our rooms. The touch was possessive, but not controlling.

It was one of the little ways that Jaiden drove me crazy. Something that was so innocent and so overtly sexual at the same time.

“So, King,” I asked as I gravitated closer to him until our hips were touching as we walked. “Tell me of your accomplishments today.”

He growled in approval. Every time I called him “King,” I’d get some sort of reaction. Though no reactions were better than when we were between the sheets.

“I don’t want to talk. I want to fuck,” he growled.

My pussy clenched at the threat and promise of his words, even if I knew it wasn’t a positive sign. If he didn’t want to talk about his day, that meant it wasn’t good.

And a bad day for a king was a bad day for everyone.

“Talk to me. If you want me to be a queen and not a consort, I’ll need to be kept in the know.”

Jaiden snapped and the next thing I knew, I was slammed against the wall, with Jaiden’s beefy arms on either side of me, caging me in.

“You want to know what’s going on in my mind?” He pressed against me, letting me feel the sizable erection.

My breath caught, and I had to close my eyes to collect myself and stop from climbing all over him.

“We’re partners, right?” I risked opening my eyes, only to see Jaiden smirking at me.

“I love how you challenge me even when you’re afraid.” He plucked a hand away from the wall and rested his fingertips against my collarbone.

He ran the fingertips along the deep vee of the black and silver gown I wore, running between my breasts and lower, surpassing my center and coming to rest on my thigh. Teasing and titillating at the same time.

But I wouldn’t let him distract me like this. He’d never reacted this strongly to me questioning him, which meant something especially bad was going down.

Two could play this game. I reached up, gripping his hair to show I wasn’t cowed by his display of dominance. Turned on? Yes. Cowed? No. “Talk to me, King.”

He groaned, rubbing against me once more, lifting my thigh he was still gripping to open my legs for him, even though my dress was in the way.

That was it. I was introducing my elven stylists to miniskirts.

He devoured my mouth in a deep and devastating kiss, and by the time he pulled back, we were both gasping for breath. “The Seelie kingdom has opened a portal to Earth. A permanent one.”

Well, that was a splash of cold water. “What does that mean?”

“I heard they have a collection of human women. I want to find a way to free them without starting another all-out war.”

“Aren’t you already at war?”

“A standstill. Happily pretending the other doesn’t exist. Which was easier when we thought we’d both die out eventually. Now that there is hope, there’s danger.”

From what I knew about the Seelie fae, they wouldn’t hesitate to use and abuse them. “We can’t just leave them.”

“I know,” he bit out, offended I’d even suspect that.

But I wasn’t naive. Before Mia’s—and my—arrival, Jaiden thought the same about humans. I sometimes thought his opinions hadn’t changed. It was only me that he liked more.

However, he planned to bring a lot more women over eventually and had to lay the groundwork for acceptance.

“I need to talk to them,” I said suddenly.

“You’re adorable.” He kissed me on the nose.

“No. Look around here. I’m getting along with the elves. Your generals tolerate me. Maybe if we have some positive publicity campaign, it will turn the tide.”
