I didn’t want to be adorable. I wanted to help.

That was the joy of going into STEM. It would allow me to make a difference in the world. To change things for the better.

Usually those changes went through one millimeter at a time, or nanometer, where physics were concerned.

Sitting back, playing dress-up, and having playtime in a library—admittedly, the library of my dreams—just wasn’t how I operated. “I want to help. I don’t want to just be some bedwarmer to you.”

He pressed a kiss to my forehead. It was moments like this, when he was so sweet and unexpected, that really threw me off guard. I could manage him slapping my ass and ordering me to bend over.Manage?I meant lived for those moments.

But this tenderness was out of my wheelhouse.

“I love that you are offering. But until I’m sure I have the resources to keep you safe, I want you to stay in the protection of the castle. Understand?”

Well, when he put it like that, it was hard to argue with.

He had started using the word “love” a lot. But never saying he loved me specifically. He loved how I laughed. He loved my hair. He loved the sounds I made while he went to town between my legs.

But did I love him? Who was I kidding? I was so far gone for this mythical being who, for some reason, had chosen me. I wanted to help. I wanted to be useful.

I knew that he respected me and even admired all that I had accomplished back on Earth. But how could I respect myself if I sat back and became some pampered puppet?

“I understand,” I answered, unable to hide my sullenness.

“Good. Now if you’re a really good girl, I’ll make sure you get a reward.”

If I had any panties to wear, I’d be soaked. “Is that right, Your Majesty?”

He leaned to close the distance between us, but we broke away at the sound of footsteps pounding down the hall.

Even before I saw the contingent of warriors flowing into the corridor, I knew something bad had happened.

“Sir,” called Wolfe in his low, gruff voice. “There’s a fire in the armory.”

I didn’t have to be a science major to know about all of the explosive materials stored there. “Go.” I stepped back from the men, my way of assuring Jaiden that I wouldn’t get in the way.

“Radien is already there. I’ll stay with the human.”

It was the most words I’d ever heard him say. Another sign of how serious this was.

Raiden was the general of the Court of Water, so he would be the best bet to hold back the fire. Wolfe headed up the Court of Storms, but large amounts of wind and lightning would only be detrimental when it came to fire control.

Even that would be better than what I could provide. A human hauling buckets of water was nothing compared to fae magic.

Maybe Albor and I could work up some sort of fire suppression system. There had to be a way for me to replicate the compounds in a fire extinguisher here. I’d never heard of a fire happening before, but at least this would give me something to do.

“Am I going to be locked up in my room or can I go to the library?” I asked my babysitter once the other men were gone.

He shrugged, eyes scanning the walls as though an assailant would suddenly appear at any moment.

I took his non-answer to mean I could do whatever I wanted, so I started back to the library. Wolfe’s steps followed me. He didn’t say anything, and I didn’t try to make conversation.

I tried to get a glimpse of the fire every time I passed a window, but it was too dark to make out much. It was a clear night but with no moon, all I could see was a darkened patch where smoke blocked out the stars. There was no bright glow or explosions, so I took that as a good sign.

“What do you think started the fire?” I asked as we reached the library.

Wolfe didn’t answer as he moved past me to open the door and did a visual scan of the library.

“I don’t know.”
