“You struggle,” she said, her voice full of pity that ground against me.

“No shit. I’m being murdered. Is this the holding pen until I am finally dead?” A darker thought hit me suddenly. “Am I dead already?”

Melusine smiled, and I really wanted to give her a lesson on what was and wasn’t appropriate. When someone asked if they were dead, smiling was not an accurate response.

But I forgot to be annoyed when Melusine appeared in front of me. She hadn’t walked or run. One moment, she was next to a tree; the next, she was a few inches from my face.

“Help is at hand, but hands aren’t enough.”

I tried to decipher her crazy sorceress speech. “You can help me? Can you save me?”

She frowned and shook her head. It was as if she wanted to have a normal conversation but just couldn’t make it work. “I am far from the gold. Too far to purify it. But I am reaching out. So much power, so little strength. But I want to.”

I nodded as I tried to decipher her words. “You want to help but you’re too far away.” Whether she was too far physically or mentally, I wasn’t sure.

“You have to go back. I can give you a second, maybe two. Plan your escape now.”

Two seconds to escape?“That’s not enough time. I’m not fast enough to run.”

“Strength isn’t your power.” She reached out, setting cold fingers on either side of my forehead.

“I have to think my way out. I have a second to get out of this.”

“Good luck, my queen.” She leaned in and pressed a very unexpected kiss to my lips. As her mouth touched mine, a rush of air flew into my lungs, and I was back in the real world.

The fae on top of me flew backward, shoved by an unseen force, and I knew this was my only chance.

The plan I’d come up with wasn’t my favorite, but it was all I had. I opened my mouth and screamed at the top of my lungs for the only fae who could help me right now.

“SERAN!”
