Chapter24

There was a line of fae lining my dungeon and the only thing stopping me from ripping out each and every one of their hearts was the fact that I hadn’t found Raina yet.

Kier, Radien, and Xian had all taken turns with questioning. It wasn’t that we weren’t getting the traitors to talk. It was that none seemed to know anything.

I found the culprit responsible for setting the fire. And Kier had gotten the confession that it was a planned distraction so Raina could be taken.

Unfortunately, we’d also gotten the admission that the traitors had been working with the Seelie Court. They gave them free entry into my lands and made sure that everyone was looking in another direction. That was all they needed.

Wolfe was powerful, but taken by surprise and with some sort of elven magic assistance, he hadn’t been able to stop Raina from being taken.

When I hadn’t found Raina in our rooms, I went right for the library. I expected to find her buried in a book or lost in one of her science discussions with Albor.

Instead, I’d found a disaster zone of broken shelves, shards of glass, papers strewn everywhere, and Wolfe pinned to a wall with an iron sword through each shoulder.

The Seelie had hit hard, fast, and ruthlessly. And I was going to hit them back just as hard.

“Bring me another one,” I called as I used an already bloody rag to wipe more blood off my hands.

Xian dragged one of the traitors over. The fae’s face was black and blue and red already, his hands bent at unnatural angles.

Even so, he thrashed wildly, unwilling to accept what was about to happen.

“This is your last chance,” I warned as I approached, my claws already extended, ready to inflict more damage. “You die, or you tell me something helpful.”

He was the fifth traitor I’d given this offer to so far. My patience was gone and time was running short. Torture was by no means effective in interrogations, but it worked great as a form of revenge.

“It’s just a human!” he cried. The tears streaming down his face did nothing to sway me. “The fae will never accept her authority.”

“Funny. Because I seem to recall all the Unseelie swearing fealty to me. And my authority is everything. Now can you help me or are you nothing but compost?”

His eyes bounced around the room as though he’d be able to find something to help get him out of this.

But there was nothing. His death was right in front of him, and there was no escaping if he wasn’t useful. And I suspected the Seelie they’d teamed up with had covered their tracks enough to ensure that the Unseelie traitors wouldn’t be able to share their secrets, even if they wanted to.

I wouldn’t wait any longer. If he had any information that could help, he would’ve caved already.

I swiped at his throat, cutting through the veins and tendons deep enough to hit the bone at the back. His fae healing wouldn’t work fast enough to stop his life from flowing out.

“Bring the next one!” I called.

Kier pulled the dead body away and Xian went for another traitor. The newest traitor struggled just as ineffectively as the rest. He surely knew he wouldn’t get away. But there was no escape.

I wiped at my claws once more, preparing to get blood on them again.

“Jaiden!” called Mia.

Kier and I both jerked at the sound, the woman in question pounding through the door and gasping for air.

“You need to come to the courtyard. It’s Raina.”

I growled as the earth around us started to tremble, my power aching to reach out to release this anger. “What about her?”

I prepared myself for the worst, but if Mia told me that Raina was dead, nothing would save this world from my wrath.

“She’s out there. Alive!” she quickly clarified. “King Seran is with her.”

“He’s dead,” snarled Xian.
