Chapter 61

Silas’ days were full. There was so much to be done. He had the family assets to consider, as well as the small mansion that he was planning to have built for Michael. While his brother was taking the lead on the plans for the house, Silas was assisting where he could.

His nights were filled with thoughts of Lucy. He knew that he needed to keep himself on her mind. His greatest fear was that she would meet someone else in the time that it took him to finish his grand gesture. He needed to make sure that he was still in her mind, and her heart. He needed her to know that she was still in his. So, he wrote to her.

Dear Lucy,

I know that you are likely still angry with me. However, I’m thinking of you, right now. I’m always thinking of you, wondering what you’re doing. It’s the middle of the night, and the stars are so clear in the cold night sky.

I’m remembering that first kiss that we had, in my father’s library. It was the most perfect kiss that ever a man has had.

Did you know that when you’re painting, you bite your bottom lip, particularly when you’re focusing?

I know that you’re angry with me, and that anger is entirely valid. I have been horrible. I should have told you everything, so then we could laugh in Percy’s face.

However, I believe that you are the most perfect creature in all the world. No woman could ever compare to you. I am so deeply in love with you, that I will do all that it takes to get you back.

You will see, very soon.

All my love,

Silas.

Dearest Lucy,

I have not seen you for a full week, yet I think about you always. Do you think of me? No, don’t answer that. Not unless you wish to.

How are your paintings going? What are you working on? You know, I do know of several gallery owners in London. If you would like, I could introduce you to them. I believe that they would be interested in your work. I do not say this out of personal bias, but a true belief in your work.

All my love,

Silas.

Dear Silas,

Thank you for your kind letters. You do not have to introduce me to anyone. I believe that I will continue to do my work in peace. I don’t know how I could ever sit silently if I had a gallery owner knocking on my door all day. I am quite content to sit and be merely accomplished. I am enjoying the stillness of the house while Aunt Joan goes out to call upon her friends.

The kitten is napping on the windowsill beside me. You know, it’s all your fault that I have a cat at all. I had to tell Aunt Joan that I saw a mouse in the kitchen. I do enjoy having Jocasta. She’s an absolute delight.

This is my life, and I enjoy living it.

Sincerely,

Lucy

***

Dear Lucy,

I believe that you’re selling yourself short. You are a brilliant painter, and you offend your own genius by calling yourself “merely accomplished.” I shall prove it to you by stealing your gift to Dinah and keeping it for my very own. Are you coming to her party? Please do not forgo coming out of a desire to avoid me.

With love,

Silas
