Dear Silas,

Unfortunately, I cannot attend the party at all. Aunt Joan and I are expected to dine at Mrs Trent’s. Do not blame this on yourself. We had already had plans, which we cannot put off.

Although, I must admit, I am still upset with you. You have behaved most shamefully. I think that you perjure yourself most grievously. I am notattemptingto avoid you—I am doing so successfully.

Sincerely,

Lucy

Dearest Lucy,

You injure me! I have apologized, yet I know that I must make an act which proves my love to you, without a doubt. All will be revealed in time. Please come to the party. Dinah is most upset that you and Miss Joan will not be there. It won’t at all be the same.

Do you ever think of that time that we spent in the woods? I think that you do. That painting of the lovers which you sent to Dinah (and has most certainly been received) is definitely inspired by it.

The remembrance of it brings me much pleasure. I certainly wouldn’t want you to forget it.

With love,

Silas

Dear Silas,

Think whatever you like. As the artist, I will reveal nothing.

Sincerely,

Dear Miss Lucy Wilds, Painter,

The party went off without a hitch, earlier this evening. It was not the same without you. You were much missed. Dinah and I both agreed. I hope that you had an enjoyable evening dining with Mrs Trent.

I have partaken of the champagne, and the night feels so alive. It’s nearly three of the clock, but I am sitting here in my room, wishing that you were here.

I think of no one but you, always. You haunt all of my thoughts.

If I could conjure you, I would.

With love,

Silas Sweet, Viscount of Thornbridge, and novice conjurer

Dear Silas, novice conjurer,

You will certainly have to do better. Alas, I am still comfortably ensconced on the settee in my parlour. I am sipping a cup of tea and am quite at my leisure. The cat sleeps on the arm of the chair. She snores.

Waiting for you to perform some magic,
