Maxim

Letting her go, I turn my attention to her mom and sister. The look on their faces when I arrived was priceless. I was at the bar having a drink. I wasn't going to make myself known this soon, but it all changed when I saw Sophia's body language. I can just imagine the terrible things her sister was practically yelling at my girl. I felt my restraint snap, and my legs moved on their own. Glad I did because after Sophia dropped that bomb, I thought I was going to have to get a clean-up crew in here. Sophia looked like a lioness ready to pounce. I’ve never been so attracted to anyone as I was at that moment.

I’m ignoring all my responsibilities to chase around a woman who has thrown in my face that she doesn’t want me. Many times. She can lie to herself all she wants, but not to me. I can’t wait to play with her tonight. I went to the store earlier and got some toys to use on her. If she wants to act like a brat, then I'll punish her like one.

“Okay, Sophia’s boyfriend that we’ve heard nothing of, tell me more about yourself. Since my sister doesn’t care enough to mention you,” Sophia's sister says, and anger bubbles up inside of me at her tone. I’ve killed people for less. This bitch needs to be put in her place.

“Well, Jenny. You were told the reason why Sophia hasn’t spoken about me. Can we please move on from that? Sophia is a very busy doctor. That’s why we both decided for me to come here and meet you two beautiful ladies. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I didn’t think it would be an intrusion, and that was my fault. I couldn’t wait to meet the most important people in her life.” I bring up my charm and smile at them. Jenny looks at me like I’ve stepped on her toes. That’s right, bitch. Nobody, not even family, can mess with what’s mine.

“Uhm, no, no. It’s fine. It’s not an intrusion,” Sophia's mom says, giving Jenny a death stare.

“Thank you for having me,” I reply to them.

“I would love to learn more about you. Is that a Russian accent I hear?”

“That is correct. Both my parents are Russian. My brother and I were born here, but my father was a man of tradition and wanted us to keep our Russian roots.” That bastard did more than that.

“I can understand that. I try to do the same for the girls, but you can see how well that worked out. Sophia hardly speaks Spanish. At least she understands it.” I laugh at that.

“Hey, I can speak Spanish if I need to. I just refuse to.”

“I’m sure you can, krasavitsa.” I wink at her and feel her body relax next to me.

She whispers to me, “Call me flounder one more time, and I’m going to stab you with this fork.” She makes a show of grabbing the fork.

“You got yourself another strike. Keep going. I dare you.”

“What do you do for a living, Maxim?” Jenny asks.

The waiter chooses that moment to arrive with a pitcher of something red with fruits. What in the world is that? I’m not drinking that.

“Can you bring me a Jack on the rocks?”

“Right away, sir.” He scurries off without glancing at me. I’m used to that by now. People look at me and scurry off in the other direction. I live off that shit. The fear I cause them.

“I own a Cadillac dealership,” I say, getting them to turn their attention back to me. Not at the boy running away like a little bitch.

“The big one off the highway?” Sophia's mom asks.

“Yes, that one.” She gives me a once-over. Is she judging me?

“How old are you?” she asks me.

“Thirty-seven.”

She gapes at me. I’m used to that reaction from people. Most of the older generation can’t fathom that someone as young as me has such power and wealth. What they don’t know is the respect I have. I've been working for it since I was ten years old. I’ve seen and done it all. Nothing can surprise me at this point except the beautiful, luscious redhead sitting next to me. I rub my thumb on her shoulder and can feel the goosebumps rising on her skin under my touch. That’s right, baby girl. I own you, even if you deny it.

“That’s impressive.” Jenny whistles.

“I’ve been told. But it's not what I own that's impressive; it’s the hard work I’ve done to make it the way it is.”

“So what I’m hearing is that you’re another workaholic like my sister.”

“Jennifer Carmen Perez, you stop it right now. If you continue to behave like this, I suggest you get up and leave,” Sophia's mom snaps.

“Sorry, Mama.” Jenny slides out of the booth. “I’m going to go to the bathroom.”

“I’m sorry for my daughter's behavior.”
