Looking over at Sophia, I see her fidgeting with her fingers. She’s anxious. I let go of her shoulder and clasp her hand under the table. When I squeeze her hand, she releases a breath, and I kiss her on the side of her head. What is she doing to me? I don’t do these things. When I look back at Sophia’s mother, she’s giving me a knowing smile.

“No need to apologize. I’m part of the family now,” I say, trying to get a rise out of my vicious fiery lioness, but no luck. She seems to be inside her head. I hate that her family makes her feel this way. I want to drag her out of this restaurant and lock her in a gilded fucking room, never to let these people affect her like this again. It’s more her sister, but her mom seems not to do much to stop it. She’s just as much to blame.

The waiter arrives with my drink, and we order. Jenny isn’t back from the bathroom, so her mom orders for her. I take the chance to talk to my girl.

“Hey, snap the fuck out of it,” I whisper.

She looks up at me, and what I see in her eyes fills me with so much anger. I have to count to a hundred to stop myself from telling off her mom and sister. Jenny arrives a few minutes after, and the rest of the dinner is uneventful. We chat more about my life, eat, and go separate ways. Sophia did not say a word the entire lunch, and she hardly ate. After I take care of the bill, we say our goodbyes, and then I take Sophia to her car.

“I have something to do now, krasavitsa. I need to check if Elena settled in smoothly, but I’ll see you tonight. Be ready by seven.” She nods, and I lose it. I’ve had enough of this Sophia. After being around her family, she's not herself, and I wouldn’t say I like it. I grab her chin and force her to look at me. She looks up at me, lost and confused. I give her a soft kiss that has her melting into me. Our kiss gets more profound, but I break away before taking her right here in the middle of this parking lot. Fuck going out. I can’t wait to bury myself in her. She also has a punishment waiting for her.

“Changed my mind. We're staying in tonight. I’ll be at your house around seven.”

“I won’t open the door,” she replies with a smile. There she is.

“Then you leave me no choice but to break the door, Milaya.” I nibble her bottom lip.

“I know what that one means. I looked it up.”

“Yeah? Pray tell. What does it mean?”

“Google says it means ‘babe.’”

I grin and drop one more kiss before grabbing her keys and opening her car door.

“Get inside. I have things to do.” She gets in her car and turns it on.

“See you later, krasavitsa.”

But before I close the door fully, she screams, “Stop calling me a fucking fish.” I smile and walk to my car.

The smile stays plastered on my face until I open the door to my house, and I’m welcomed by my brother fucking Elena on the couch.

“Don’t you have a fucking room?”

My voice booms over the room, startling both of them. Elena scurries off the couch, pulling down her dress, while Andrei brings up his pants, jumping up and down. He steps in front of Elena and messes with his hair.

“Hi, brother. I wasn’t expecting you to be back this soon,” he says, a little flustered.

Annoyed at him for ruining my good mood, I quip, “You can’t get rid of me just yet, brother. I’m still the boss, and this is my home too. Next time keep it in your pants until you make it to your room.” Heading to my office, I holler back at him, “I expect you here in fifteen minutes. We have business to discuss.” I see him and Elena exchanging glances.

After a few phones calls later, Andrei finally arrives.

“What part of fifteen is so hard to understand?”

“I was helping Elena settle in.” Yeah, I’m sure he was helping her settle in.

“Her being here better not be a distraction, Andrei. Now more than ever, your head should be in the game. You know we can't afford to make a mistake.”

“You have some fucking nerve, Maxim.” He releases an unamused laugh. "Warning me when you have not been able to concentrate since the day we met Sophia. She’s a distraction to you, and you are warning me of the same thing?” I don’t get mad at Andrei often. When we were younger, we made a pact to stick together, us against our father and the world. He shouldn’t have mentioned Sophia. My rational mind knows he only said that because of what I said about Elena, but I don’t give a shit.

Placing my hands on my desk, I look straight into his eyes. He gulps. He knows he fucked up.

“Maxim, I’m—” I don’t give him the chance to finish that sentence.

“She’s not a fucking distraction. Now get the fuck out. Go back to fucking, because that’s all you seem to be good at.”

He sighs. “I shouldn’t have said that, Maxim. I like her, but Sophia isn’t even interested in you. She throws it in your face every chance she gets. I know you love the chase, but we can’t afford any distractions, as you said. She isn’t worth all the effort you’re putting in. This isn’t you, and I’m not the one letting a woman get in the way of my job.” Sophia is worth the chase, though. He doesn’t get it. She’s mine, and I don’t give a fuck what anyone says.
