I take a seat up front and start to daydream. Maybe I should get a tattoo of Bristle. I could do it in black and white and have her eyes be the only color in it. Her hair is black anyway.

My fingers itch for a pencil and some paper, but before I can go grab some, the door opens and my client walks in. I force a smile and stand as I lead him back to my room.

I can’t help but check my phone, wishing for a message from Bristle.

I’m not surprised when there isn’t one.

I’ll just have to try again later.

ChapterFour

Bristle

I’ve been thinking about Wild all day.

Actually, that’s not true. I’ve been thinking about Wild since he walked out of the Pussy Parlor last night. He even followed me into my dreams, despite my efforts to force him out of my head.

I spent all day searching for a more permanent place to live. I’ve been staying at the local motel that charges two hundred dollars for a week, but it’s pretty seedy and it’s starting to cut into my savings. Unfortunately for me, a lot of the listings were either out of my price range or with roommates that seemed like real creeps. I don’t want to trade one bad living space for another.

I sigh, gathering my hair and tying it up into a messy bun on top of my head as I head into work. I hear my stomach grumble, and I’m suddenly reminded that I never stopped to grab dinner… or lunch for that matter.

I think I spotted a vending machine in the employee lounge the other day and I hurry that way before my shift starts. I nod at a few of the dancers that I met last night. The place is just opening but there’s already a few customers lining the stage.

I’m slipping down the hallway when my phone buzzes. I know that it either has to be my mom and her ex-boyfriend or Wild and I’m not sure if I should be excited to check it, or filled with dread.

WILD:Hey, baby girl. Just wanted to see how your day was going. I’d love to take you out to dinner tonight.

I stare at the message. I am hungry… but then I remember how he had threatened to fire me and my appetite disappears. I’m not going to fall for a guy who orders me around and threatens me. No matter how intriguing and attractive I find him.

I still need to respond to him though. Otherwise he won’t’ stop messaging me, or even worse, he’ll just stop by with food.

BRISTLE:Sorry. Won’t have time.

WILD:I’ll bring you something to eat then. Be there in a little bit.

I grit my teeth, but when I look up and see that the only choice left in the vending machine is a pack of gum that looks like it’s been there for a while, I’m slightly grateful that he’s so pushy.

He still needs to know where I stand on us being together though, so that he can stop wasting both of our time.

BRISTLE:Just so you know, I’m not going to date you. So you can stop wasting your time on me.

WILD:Why do you think that? And spending time with you is never a waste.

I melt a little at his message but quickly straighten my spine and text him back.

BRISTLE:I’m never going to be with a jerk who threatened to fire me.

That might be too harsh, I think to myself, but I need him to know how much that bothered me and where my boundaries are. It’s better that he learns now.

He doesn’t respond right away and I wonder if I already scared him off. Maybe he’s realized that I’m not the easy lay that he probably thought that I was.

He has no idea how much baggage I actually have.

My phone buzzes again as I slip behind the desk in the office and I take a deep breath before I flip the screen over to read the message.

WILD:I’m sorry. I know that was too much and that I crossed a line. I just couldn’t stand the thought of you working as a stripper. I don’t want any other man to see you like that.

BRISTLE:I’m not a stripper.
