Page 172 of Small Town Love

We have two kids, both boys and they keep us on our toes. They both wanted to come with us today but Emmy Lou had vetoed that one. I promised them that I would take them once they were older and I’ve been in the doghouse for a few days after that promise.

The plane door opens and I help her stand up before I shuffle both of us toward the door. My fingers brush over her wrist and I can feel Emmy Lou’s heartbeat racing as she stares down at the ground way, way below us.

“We’re going on the count of three! Got it?”

She gives me a shaky nod and I wrap my arm around her waist.

“One, Two, Three!” I yell and before she can blink, we’re flying through the air.

The wind whips past us and I grin, although I’m sure that Emmy Lou is too shocked to feel the same level of excitement that I do right now.

The parachute opens and we slow way down. Emmy Lou is strapped to the front of me so I can’t see her expression, but she isn’t screaming so that had to be a good sign.

“That was so cool,” she yells a second later and I laugh at her excitement.

It’s quiet, still, way up here and neither of us needs to raise our voice to be heard.

“Told you,” I tell her smugly.

I let her hold the handles and steer us down lower before I take over again and move us to the landing area.

“Put your feet up,” I order her and she hurries to do as I say.

We glide to the ground and I unbuckle us. Emmy Lou immediately turns and throws herself into my arms, laughing as I spin her around.

“That was awesome. Thanks for taking me,” she says, pressing her lips against mine.

“Anytime.”

“I love you, Spencer.”

“I love you more, Emmy Lou,” I whisper as my lips land on hers once more and I grin.

I know that I was sick of being sent all over in the Army and I was looking for my freedom but instead it’s like I was dispatched to Sunny Bend to claim Emmy Lou’s heart.

She is my freedom. My family.

She’s my happily ever after.

My forever.
