Evangeline leans over, resting her hand on mine, her brow furrowed in concern.

“It was an ambush. They hit our Humvees and attacked. I got shot twice but the bigger damage was from a mortar bomb. That’s what all of the scars are from. That’s what broke my collarbone and there is leftover shrapnel from it that’s still in my shoulder.”

“I’m so sorry, Jasper. I’m sorry that you had to go through that, to witness that.”

“Part of the job,” I say, trying to brush it off but Evangeline sees through me.

“Did everyone… did they all survive?” she asks carefully, and I look away sharply, tears stinging the back of my eyes.

“No,” I whisper and she’s out of her chair and over beside me in an instant.

“I’m sorry,” she whispers over and over as I pull her down into my lap and wrap her in my arms.

I let her comfort me as the images from that night play out behind my eyes. I don’t want to tell her what it was like watching my friends die, how it felt to not be able to save them, and I don’t want those images in her head anyway.

We sit like that until the food is cold and I’ve pulled myself together. Then she kisses me softly and heads back to her own chair.

I wish that she was back in my lap instantly.

She changes the subject and tells me more about her mom and friends and I listen to her talk as she pulls me out of the darkness that I always go to when I think about that last mission.

“Is that where you got your love of flowers and plants?” I ask as she finishes telling me about her grandpa and the garden that he used to have.

“Oh yeah. He had this big yard with his own greenhouse and he planted vegetables and even had a few berry bushes. They lived over on Planter Street, a few roads away from my mom’s place. They passed away two years ago,” she says with a sad smile.

“I’m sorry.”

“Thanks. I still drive by the place. It’s nice to remember them.”

“Does someone else live there now?” I ask her and she nods.

“Yeah, I think some family uses it as a vacation place, but they’re never really there. At least not that I’ve seen.”

I nod, taking my last bite of garlic bread and Evangeline finishes off her glass of wine.

“That was delicious,” Evangeline says as I clear the plates and silverware away.

“Ready for dessert?” I ask and I turn to see Evangeline staring at me with a different kind of hunger in her eyes.

My cock hardens at the look and I swallow hard, dying for something sweeter than the chocolate cream pie that’s in the fridge.

ChapterTen

Evangeline

“Uh huh,” I murmur, my eyes locked on him.

“Evangeline, we don’t have to do anything,” he tells me quietly but I shake my head.

I want to. I want to do everything with him.

“Can I see the bedroom again?” I ask, my voice coming out low and husky.

“Whatever you want,” he says and I stand, letting him take my hand as we head to the bedroom.

I’ve never really thought much about when I would lose my virginity. As long as it was with someone who loved me, the other details like where and when, didn’t really matter that much to me.

My hands go to the zipper on the side of my sundress and I fiddle with the zipper as I stare at Jasper.
