“I know. Me too. We talked more, went to two sessions together. The work is far from over, but it’s a step.”

“Are you moving to Pittsburgh then?” I ask, swallowing hard.

“No. I heard back from the VA doctor and I don’t need a new surgery. I do know that I need help dealing with the accident and some other stuff that happened overseas, along with my childhood shit.”

“So, you’re going to the VA then?”

“Yeah. I’m going to a group veteran session and then I made an appointment for one-on-one too.”

“Good, I’m glad that you’re getting help,” I tell him honestly.

“I’m messed up, Evangeline. I have these moments where I feel like I’m going to break out of my skin. I don’t want to go back to that house and seeing it tore down made me feel like crying,” he says, his voice breaking.

Seeing him like that smashes my heart into itty bitty pieces and I want to cry too.

“I’m so sorry, Jasper.”

He nods, looking down and swallowing hard.

“I know that you think that I want to leave Rosewood, and that’s partly true, but if this week without you taught me anything, it’s that I need you. I was miserable without you.”

“Wouldn’t it be better for you if you left Rosewood though?” I ask, afraid to get my hopes up.

“I don’t want to leave you. I felt even more alone when I was in Pittsburgh and I don’t want to be in a big town. I want to be with you.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. I’m so sure that I bought a house here.”

He reaches into his back pocket, pulling out some papers and handing them over to me. I scan them, my mouth dropping open as I reread the lines.

“You’re buying my grandparents’ house?” I ask, my eyes filling with tears.

“Yeah. I put in an offer and it was accepted two days ago. I still have to close on it, but I’m staying in Rosewood.”

I look down at the papers, my heart beating out of control in my chest.

“I know how much their house meant to you, how much you missed it. I’d love it if you would eventually move in with me. I know that we’re moving fast, but I love you. I only want to be with you, Evangeline.”

“I love you too,” I say, wrapping my arms around his neck and burying my face in his chest.

He wraps his hands around me right away, holding me tight against him, and I cry happy tears.

“I only want you. I don’t care where I live as long as I’m with you. We can make better memories here together. I love you,” he whispers against the top of my head and I squeeze him tighter.

“We will,” I promise.

We stay like that for a long while, just holding each other and enjoying being back with each other. It’s still raining, so Jasper helps me lock up before he drives me back to the hotel.

He helps me out of my wet clothes and my body starts to heat as he pulls off his own. I know that we have a lot to talk about, but right now I just want the man I love to make love to me.

Jasper seems to be on the same page and he steps forward, cupping the back of my head as he bends down to kiss me. His lips meet mine and I melt against him, letting him take the lead.

We pull off the rest of our wet clothes and he picks me up, carrying me into the bedroom and spreading me out on the bed. He makes love to me slow that night, the sweat mingling with our wet hair and skin and helping us move together.

We come together and I smile up into his eyes.

“I love you,” I whisper, my hand running up his shoulder and over his scars.
